Gap Old Navy Makes Mom Jeans

Nearly every denim makeover I’ve done ends with the same conversation.

“I had no idea what a difference it would make – I thought I was safe with Gap jeans!”

Or,

“Oh my goodness why didn’t anyone tell me I was wearing Mom Jeans?? I thought that as long as I was shopping at Old Navy, I was fine!!”

Gap and Old Navy denim.  A subject that I’ve long struggled over whether to address publicly or not.  I’ve revealed the truth about them one-on-one for quite a while, but have feared the backlash of addressing it here.

I know it’s hard to swallow, because we’ve all worn them at one time or another.

But I must say it, because I am committed to being honest with you in all matters of denim.

So read it fast – like ripping off a band-aid.

Ready?

Gap and Old Navy sell Gateway Mom Jeans.

There.  It’s out there now, so let’s look at why.

I embarked on a reconnaissance mission to both stores accompanied by my dedicated husband/photographer, where I tried on every style of denim available.  I’ve gone through and analyzed the evidence collected, then matched them up with comparables in other brands.

But first, a few disclaimers:

1. Jeans can fit vastly differently depending on the body.  What may look awful on me could look good on you.  My points below are not blanket statements, just strong suggestions.

2.  We tried to match camera angles as well as possible, but seeing as how we were on an intensely covert operation and there was an especially nosy associate working the dressing room during our mission, not everything could be perfected as we wished.

3. Some people buy Gap and Old Navy because they are inexpensive.  Almost all of the jeans pictured can be attained for about the same price as a pair of Gap jeans. (My current favorite way to get designer jeans at half off or more is through Nordstrom Rack or their app, HauteLook.) Good fit does not have to be expensive.

Let’s start with Gap.

1. The first style I tried on was called Real Straight.

Gap Real Straight

These jeans, on the surface, do not qualify for the number one definition of Mom Jeans: pockets ending before the lower curvature of the butt.

However, they do have some concerning areas that clearly qualify them as Gateway Mom Jeans.  Specifically, they make an unattractive inverted heart betwixt the cheeks, and the pockets are SO DANG GIGANTIC that they could hold a small Llama.

Gap Real Straight Problem Areas

Perhaps on their own, it’s not clear enough.  For comparison, here they are as compared to an Antik straight leg:

Gap Straight Vs Antik Straight

Yes, that is the same butt.  No, I didn’t starve myself between the two photos.

2. Next I tried on Gap’s Always Skinny.

Gap Always Skinny

Again, these aren’t terrible.  But they’re not great.  They give me an extremely wideset rear view, and repeat the Kangaroo Pouch Pockets.

Notice the width shrinkage when compared to a well-shaped pair of skinny jeans bought from a neighboring mall store:

Gap Always Skinny Vs Express ReRock Skinny

You can see how the smaller pocket, in this case, gives the curve and lift to offer pep and life, rather than a flat, weighed down look.  Also, specifically on a skinny jean, the smaller pocket helps lessen the inverted triangle issue by separating the butt from the thigh.

Gap Always Skinny Vs Express ReRock Skinny Side

(You might remember that we discussed the flattering qualities of large pockets in a prior post.  While this is true, when the pockets are disproportionately dinasauric, the effect is not nearly so ideal.)

3. The next pair I tried on was the Gap Original Fit.

Gap Original Fit

Clearly, these are horrifying.  Especially note how the pockets are so wide-set that it gives me a third butt cheek, and the tapered yet loose leg is classic Mom Jean.

Gap Original Fit Problem Areas

Also?  No one should EVER need a zipper THAT LONG.

Gap Original Fit Zipper Length t

If you desire something classic yet modern and flattering forgoodnesssake, by all means go with a nice, conservative 7 For All Mankind.

4.  Let’s move on.  Quickly.  To Gap Perfect Boot.

Gap Perfect Boot

I found these to be the least offensive.  However, the pockets were still too wide-set and oversized, once again offering the appearance of a supersized caboose.  Notice the immediate shrinking sensation when compared to a pair of Hudson Bootcut:

Gap Boot Vs Hudson Boot

5. Next: the Gap Curvy Fit.

Gap Curvy Fit

Oddly enough, the Curvy Fit seemed to take away all of my curves and conglomerate them into a giant pile of lumpishness.

If you have curves and need room for them to move and breathe, Miss Chic or LA Idol are awesome options with quite a bit more visual interest and flattering fit:

6. My next fitting was in Gap Long and Lean.

Gap Long and Lean

This pair was the only pair that qualified beyond Gateway and straight into Mom Jeans – at least on me, as the pockets ended significantly before the lower curvature of my butt:

Gap Long and Lean Problem Areas

However, one of my best friends wears Gap Long and Lean, and I’ve always been puzzled as to how they look so great on her – especially since we even wear the same size.  So, in fairness, I present to you evidence that Gap jeans can look right on the exact right body:

Gap Long and Lean Right and Wrong Body

Let me assure you, though – I have counseled many former Gap wearers, and the friend pictured above is the exception, not the rule.

So if you don’t have that rare Gap-flattered body and you want to look Long and Lean, might I suggest Rock and Republic – notice the immediate leg-lengthening effect:

Gap Long and Lean Vs Rock and Republic

7. The last Gap style that I found was highly ironically named…the Sexy Boyfriend.

Gap Sexy Boyfriend

OH NO THEY DIDN’T.

I SO wish I could have found these in my size to try on.

Pleats.

Darts.

Flap Inner-Only Pockets.

TAPERED. LEG.

Have you ever seen any man under 70 wearing jeans like this, let alone a sexy boyfriend??

I shudder to think.

But I did find one last treasure before I left Gap…

8. The Gap Denim Romper.

Gap Denim Jumper

Yes.  I was ashamed.

Gap Denim Jumper t

(And my cameraman didn’t like my visible bra strap.)

Just in case you missed it, the back waist actually qualifies this outfit as… Grandma Jeans.

Gap Denim Jumper Elastic Waist

I apologize to your retinas.

I rushed out of Gap and headed to Old Navy.

Which was somewhat akin to jumping out of the frying pan and into the nuclear incinerator.

I tried on every style that they had in both bootcut and skinny, but neither leg choice was better than the other.  So, to summarize, here are all three of their major styles in bootcut.

Old Navy Bootcut Comparison

The Diva was the least offensive, but still lacked style or a flattering cut.

The Dreamer copied Gap’s main problem of wide-set pockets and triple butt.

And the Sweetheart was unapologetically a hardcore Mom Jean.

Just in case you needed a healthy comparison, I offer them against 7 For All Mankind:

Old Navy Bootcut Comparison with 7 For All Mankind Stacked

Lest you think that I have somehow doctored my photos (which I have not) or that this information is only applicable to my body type, here are a few examples of others who have been freed from the noose of Gateway Mom Jeans:

Subject A, a close friend who had no idea how flattering and comfortable great jeans could be:

Makeover Old Navy to LA Idol 2

Subject B, a blog reader and mom of four kids:

Makeover Old Navy to LA Idol

And Subject C, a new Mom and blog reader from the other side of the country who got a long-distance makeover via the following before-and-after butt-texts:

Makeover Gap to Express Rerock

(Yes, I get butt-texts quite often, usually accompanied with the question, “Are these Mom Jeans?” If you need to butt-text me, just let me know and I’ll give you my number.)

After Subject C bought her jeans, she sent me a couple more full-length before and after photos (with an adorable baby leg included as a bonus):

But.

Even if you look great in Gap jeans – even if they fit you perfectly, the pockets are proportionately correct, and the style was made for your body type, here is my biggest argument against Gap and Old Navy Jeans:

They stretch out.

Ferociously.

Unforgivingly.

Ridiculously.

Gap and Old Navy Stretch Out

So even if they don’t look like Mom Jeans when you put them on, they will before the next episode of Dora the Explorer is over.

  1. WHOA! #joey

Hmmm, I wonder if Gap, Inc. made some major changes, when I worked for ON (a gazillion years ago in high school) their jeans fit really well. I don’t know that I have any to compare now (I think all I have are maternity jeans in my closet – ouch!), but my buns are coming your way really soon!

    1. I’m not sure if or when there was a change, because it does seem that they used to be better. Maybe they just haven’t updated with the times.

I have an open house tomorrow, and another on on 7/20. Let me know if you want to stop by!

      1. I have noticed that Old Navy shirts have gotten WAY flimsier the last few years– so threadbare & thin that they get holes after a few washes. They used to have great t-shirts & now they’re mostly junked out after one season. I still have GAP & Old navy shirts from several years ago that have held up to years of wear, but the newer ones get pilly & frayed very fast, so it makes sense that their jeans would also be of cheaper quality these days.

    2. Yes! They have changed EVERYTHING! I am still wearing my ORIGINAL bootcut in size 12 from 2005! I LOVE them and luckily they are not worn out yet! Luckily I also have a pair of size 10’s to go when the others get too big! Their new styles are HORRIBLE! I’ve tried a couple and, again, HORRIBLE!

      1. I agree there’s been a change in ON jeans. I am still wearing a pair of sorta bootcut I bought on vacation in Hawaii in 2000-ish. I love how they look, but do not like the new jeans at ON.

Loved this article – lots to consider on my next jean-hunting expedition! :)

      2. I agree they changed them, sometime around 2004. I had a pair of their jeans (with the 4 inch tag inside the waistline) that I had to stop wearing when I was pregnant. 3 pregnancies later I tried them back on and omg it was like an old friend. I went back to try on the same type and NO NO NO, it was horrible. I cried the day they finally gave up the ghost. I won’t even discuss what ON has done to my behiney.

I have found Kohl’s Apartment 9 to randomly have very nice jeans (but it’s very season specific. Year before last, AWESOME, last year, not so much for my body).

        1. I totally agree with the Kohl’s Apt 9 comment. I LOVE those but they are mainly around during the Fall and Winter and they are a treasure when I find them.

I lost 50 pounds last year and went from a size 16 to a size 8…You don’t think I don’t want my butt to look good? lol I will for sure be paying more attention. After all, I am a mother of 4 and now have a kid in 7th grade so I don’t want to be an embarrassment. ;)

        2. Rachel I love your reviews . I agree with you 100 percent on the jeans as how they fit women.

I am a guy and i have tried on most brands of womens jeans myself . I find thet the old navy sweetheart boot cut is great fitting for a guy , the stretch gives all the room and comfort a guy actually needs . They feel really good and comfortable . when they stretch out they are now the proper size for a guy it only takes 20 mins of wearing. they dont sag off and look crappy . Old navy sweethearts are great on a guy . I wear them all the time . I also like the older levis perfect waist .

I think women look sexy in good fitting jeans . especially the 30 plus moms who are trying to look hot Most of them do !

      3. Yes, they have changed! I don’t like their jeans now. I bought a pair of Gap Long and Lean in 2006 (from Plato’s Closet), and since I lost my college weight and can now fit in them again, my roommate comments on how “shapely” they make my caboose look now (she keeps asking me what I’m doing in my work outs). My other pair of jeans is a pair of True Religion (that I love) that look good too, but I’m almost too small for them now. I’m thinking I need to check out the Express pair though…those are beautiful!

    3. Yes, gap replaced all their denim patterns and fabrics while keeping the product names in August 2008. They raised prices $20 across the board, called the new line “1969”, and referred to it as “premium denim”, which was pretty rude, considering the new materials are thinner, stretch out quickly, and are quite obviously cheaper.

Believe me, before 2008 the long & lean was not a mom jean! They threw out the original pattern when they remade the line; I would never buy a pair now.

      1. Same with Old Navy – they must have changed the denim across the board in Gap, Inc. in 2008. That’s when I was working for ON. I remember having so many customers complain about the new styles – the new Sweetheart style has nothing on the old Curvy Style…and that bothered a LOT of hippy ladies.

        1. Christina, yes! I worked for ON before the switch. I was in college and I thought their jeans were the best ever. Then they changed it and nothing looked right :p

        2. Gap and Old Navy are made by the same company so that comparison would make sense. I don’t wear either, mainly because I don’t have either store within 55 miles of me. I’ve never tried on Old Navy and now I know I don’t need to. Thanks for the info.

      2. Oops, I misspoke, it was 2009, not 2008. It was spurred by Patrick Robinson, who was hired by GAP in ’07 to head up design. Everyone was excited about his hire, as GAP was already sliding into a frumpy design image, and he was considered to be the kind of designer who would revive the brand.

Here’s an article about the redesign; like most press from that time its tone is positive. Meanwhile, gap customers were posting reviews like (not making this up) “GAP RUINED THE WORLDS MOST PERFECT JEAN!” http://www.esquire.com/style/fashion-story/patrick-robinson-designer-0809

        1. Gap just got rid of Mr Robinson this last winter and the designer for Gap kids, the only profitable brand for the last couple years, took over until they find a new designer. I have not heard more about in a few months.
I have a Gap jeans horror story, 2 actually. I bought a $80 pair of the new 1969 design and they ripped in 2 wearings exchanged them, ’cause I liked them and still trusted the Gap quality at the time, ripped again tried to return them, but the manager wouldn’t take them, had them tailored to stitch the rip…ripped on the side of the tailored seam. I have a super hard time finding jeans in my size or for my padunk-a-dunk butt(14-16), tried another pair of super dark wash curvy jeans(cute) zipper broke, replaced the zipper at the tailor after the Gap wouldnt return them….screwed again. I had shopped at the Gap since middle school for basics and good deals….I still stop in for their extreme sale rack, but even when I find something that I think is cute that is more than a bargain, I have to remind myself about those jeans and the terrible return policy. Sad : (

          1. Oh goodness! That’s terrible. It reminds me of my junior high days of shopping at Goody’s – almost everything I ever bought had a hole when I bought it!

      3. Which would explain why I ripped a pair across the thigh trying to pull them up. I havent bought a pair in over 10 years but thought I’d give them another chance. I think you can guess that I did NOT leave with a pair of Gap jeans and instead ordered a pair of designer jeans online, which fit beautifully btw.

      4. Yes! Ding-ding-ding!! I have a pair of “1969” Long & Lean jeans and I NEVER wear them. They are thin, don’t keep their shape after a few hours.. it’s just a terrible, very awkward fit. So in the closet they just sit…
I wore Long & Lean jeans religiously…. prior to the new “1969” —- They were thicker, lasted forever, fit great.

Same with EXPRESS though, has anyone noticed?? I wore them religiously too. Their denim has also gotten thinner. They are all stretchy thin, pucker. Ugh. When I think I am buying a nice pair online, it ends up to be legging-like! I pray that my old Barely Boots that I wear last forever… they won’t but I can pray!
Oh it’s just not the same…. I want DENIM – NOT JEGGINGS! ;)

    4. Something has definitely changed recently. I have two pairs of the Dreamer jeans. I bought one pair in 2010 and one pair in late 2011. The 2010 pair fits like a dream and does not look like mom jeans on me. The 2011 pair is really saggy in the pelvic area and butt after ten minutes of wearing them. They live at the bottom of the jeans pile for working outdoors and laundry emergencies only!

      1. Sometimes the way a pair of pants / jeans / shirt fits will depend on where in the stack it was cut out. Clothing cut towards the top of the stack tends to be truer to size, but items cut on the bottom of the stack tend to be on the larger side. So it is possible to buy jeans in the exact same size at the same time and have them fit differently. Always try on in store to make sure they fit correctly to avoid a bad fit on a product you know should fit well.

        1. I used to work for Gap Inc, and that is very true! I would even say if you don’t feel like trying on in the store (or if you order online) wear them around the house for a bit before taking the tags off. This way you can see how they fit after moving around and how much they will stretch.

    5. I haven’t worn jeans in two years, yes, that is true…. and I miss them. I use to have an old pair of Gap Long and Lean and LOVED them, but after two kids, but I’m a size bigger and they don’t make them the same. What brands do you like best?

        1. Rachel…. you should check out Miss Me jeans… incredible fit for adult women… I love my ReRock for Express jeans.. but the MissMe jeans are even better….

          1. Please, if you are over the age of 20 do not wear miss me jeans or any other jeans with jewels all over the pockets. They are not attractive. Do you really want to be the 40 something who looks like she is trying to dress like her daughter. Also, it absolutely depends on your size and shape. I think the express jeans look best on this woman. Do they make them with plain pockets?

        2. Are there any affordable jeans you like? Every brand you listed is entirely out of my budget. Yes, even for one pair, there is no way I can spend that kind of money on jeans.

          1. The least expensive jeans that I have personally tried and love are Express Stella cut. They are often on sale, and Express also has great coupons. If you can combine the two, they’re around $30 a pair.

          2. I buy Levi’s at wal-Mart for around 20 a pair. They have just enough stretch to be comfortable without the unflattering aspects. Most importantly for me, they don’t ride so low that my behind is hanging out when I bend over! I guess the stretch helps with that, too. Make all the judgments you want about my jeans coming from Walmart, but I have gotten more compliments on them than any other jean I’ve ever worn. I swear by them. I’m a size 4-6, 5’6” and around 130 and I usually wear boot cut or skinny.

        3. Cracks me up when the post comments that you don’t have to spend a lot to get a good jean, yet the brands that are your favorite are all ridiculously expensive–well over $100, most closer to $200. That’s great, if you have the money to spend. Most people don’t. And even if they did, many wouldn’t pay that much simply on principal.

          1. Express jeans can be gotten on sale and with coupons for around $30-40. The other jeans are available through Vault for $48-92. Still more than Old Navy, but totally worth it for the quality difference.

          2. I completely agree with you, Nancy. Why spend so much on jeans? Every body is different, and you might have to do some, or lots, of trying-on, but you will find a pair eventually. Rachel, I feel like the majority of the jeans that you preferred were not age appropriate for older women. Anyone outside of college should not be wearing jeans that have “embossed” back pockets or back pockets that have lots of extra crap on them. This is juvenile look. Go for a darker jean with some stretch. Dark jeans are slimming. Jeans that you showed that had the whisker marks and light patches only highlight things and less than ideal behinds. Find a jean that is dark and mainly one shade. That’s my advice. I actually liked the GAP curvy jeans on you better than the option you picked out.

        4. Doesn’t work unless you’re a size 12 or under, unfortunately…and if you’re a curvy 12, forget it. I was considered a “premium denim” size 12 (32) when I was 105 lbs (I’m 5’7″) due to my hips…that was when I was in college. Out in the real world…at 30 years old and the natural aging process takes over…good luck fitting into those premium lines if you have hips or bigger thighs. I’m a size 14 everywhere else, but not even Lucky’s size 34’s fit me. It’s a damn shame too…because I have TONS of premium denim sitting in bins in my parents basement….well over $2000 worth that I would LOVE to fit into again and no amount of working out or dieting is going to make that happen ….if only hip shaving surgery were a possibility! Also…Rock & Republic is sold at Kohls now…the quality has gone done quite a bit. They DO however go up to a size “16”…which is a tight 16 if you’re truly a 16, but maybe worth a try. Even if the quality has diminished, it’s still a few steps up from GAP/ON.

          1. Hip Shaving would be a very popular surgery indeed!! I agree – unfortunately many designer brands don’t go up to those sizes. I’ve been researching for the last few weeks what to do about that, and will be posting a sequel post later this week or next week.

    6. I work at Old Navy now, and bought their jeans for ages before I started working there. I an’t tell you how many complaints are coming in daily about jeans. They have changed the composition of them and the new ones are simply terrible. Sadly it seems they improved the men’s jeans and completely ruined the women’s.

      1. I agree! My son really likes ON jeans. I buy T-shirts and button downs for him there as well, but I can’t find anything worth purchasing for my girls or myself. Not even on clearance. Other than their flip flops, I do like those. LOL

    7. Sadly, I worked at Old Navy very recently for five years and never thought their jeans were bad. I own nothing but Old Navy and Gap jeans, and I don’t think they look bad, but I agree that the comparable jeans DO look much better! However, I HATE stuff on the pockets, and there is something on every one of the comparable styles you show here. I see a correlation in the size of the back pocket and how big your butt looks, but I just don’t want all that embroidery and design and stuff on the pockets!!

      1. Exactly Kaylan! Jeans with all of that design on the butt pockets is fine every now and again…looks trendy, etc… BUT for those of us (well) over 30 who want a classic, everyday jean that style will not work (I actually DO own and like jeans with embroidery and big designs but those are certainly not my go-to, everyday jeans).

In fact, just today I bought a pair of Long and Leans and a pair of Perfect Boot. My biggest complaint about them is that they don’t come in more colors/washes!

I love the Long and Leans because they are very slimming on the hips! And, I love the wider, curved waistband of the Perfect Boot. Another thing, they are both mid-rise jeans! Most jeans these days are low-rise! That works perfectly fine, I suppose, if you are a size 6 (which I haven’t been in a number of years) AND you have slim (less curvy) hips. However, if you have the kind of pear-shaped body that Rubens glorified on canvas then you would do well to steer clear of low-rise jeans (they make you look wider and they don’t stay up and they dig in and create bigger “muffins”…NOT attractive!)
By the way, I actually like that the jeans stretch a bit (not a TON…but certainly some – different styles and washes stretch more or less than others) and they soften up with wear.
The Perfect Boot is the best fitting pair of jeans (for my body) that I have come across in a long while… although, admittedly, I don’t shop in the over $100 bracket for jeans. To me, that is simply ridiculous. Paying $60 is as high as I want to go.

    8. I wear a pair of ON jeans that my sister gave me from the ’90’s and they fit great and they don’t stretch out. I used to work at ON too and refuse to buy their jeans because 1. they don’t look good on me 2. they stretch out fast and are falling off. I hate being that person hiking up her jeans all day. So all that to say, i think that the quality has completely changed and it is rather disappointing.

    9. I used to think ON and Gap jeans were great. However, I’ve changed my taste quit a bit since then lol. When I was in HS, sad to say 10 years ago, old navy and gap fit fine, but now that I have a “woman’s body” they’re pretty awful…definitely mom jeans waiting to happen and sadly since HS, size wise I haven’t changed much 110lbs to about 125lbs now…crazy how differently clothes fit on adults lol! Express, the Limited & J. Crew definitely have the best fitting jeans for me now…bye bye ON & Gap lol!

  2. I NEVER fit into the pants at Gap or Old Navy. In the smaller sizes, they make the hips super wide, the waist super small, and the butt ballooning out. The pants always make me look like I have giant thighs, which is obviously not what I am going for.

And who names these pants, anyway? “Diva Bootcut”? How does one determine that a particular cut of jeans is more “diva” than another?

But that romper I think could be called the “Sexy Widowed Girlfriend;” what do you think?

    1. That must be why the Old Navy jeans fit me… I’m little in the middle but I’ve got much back! :) small waist, big bottom & thighs (I generally have to size up and have the waist nipped in) but designer jeans just do not work for girls with big thighs. Also, I prefer a cleaner pocket, no need to bling up my big butt ;)

      1. I have to agree with this comment. My butt is round and I have thick, muscular thighs. I’m not that big (an 8) but jeans are extremely hard to find. I like plain jeans and I dont feel comfortable in jeans that fit tight because I go from hip to plumber’s crack as soon as I sit down. I haven’t tried most of the brands above. I know Express has great jeans, but are some of the others juniors jeans (odd numbers sizes)? I steer clear of those based on my body type.

Good post though and I know you gave a disclaimer before! It was kind of a reality check I guess I should probably try some different brands until I find the perfect jean for a big booty girl.

        1. I was an old fan of the OLD Gap Curvy’s and when they changed them, not only did I notice that the fabric went cheap but the fit changed as well. No longer did they fix my 3+ inches of spare fabric at the waist (required by getting a size large enough for my hips and rear, a problem I’ve had since I was 7 or 8). I finally have found something that works for larger booty (but smaller waisted) gals, denim I can wear without a belt in half of their cuts. Go try Kut from the Kloth (I get them at Nordstrom) bootcut.

        2. I also have a big butt and musculer thighs. Wearing a size 8 or 6(if I have been hitting the gym extra hard) and jeans are hard to find. I found Joe’s Jeans and they are by far the best ever. Come in a tone of colors and styles and no bling on the butt. When Macy’s has them on sale I stock up.

      2. If you have larger thighs try seven jeans. Theirs are much roomier in this area. Unfortunately the reason I know this is I tried a pair on and they looked ridiculous on me because the thighs were way too baggy!

      3. Designer jeans don’t work for girls with big ANYTHING. I’m shaped similarly to you, it sounds like…and I know for a fact Old Navy jeans don’t look like mom jeans on my bubble butt. XD

      4. “But designer jeans just do not work for girls with big thighs. ” This is not true at all women! I am also a woman with a tiny waist and large butt and thighs. I wear Tuesdays made by Silver from the Buckle, around $88 a pair but comparable to Gap prices, about $70. Tuesdays are small in the knee but have a lot of space in the hip/thigh/butt area. I am not dogging on Jen in any way shape or form, jut trying to help out girls like me in the jean department. They last a long time and make your flatter this body shape tremendously. They are also quite stretchy allowing more room in the problem areas, but hold up and don’t fall apart or stretch out much. The Buckle WILL tell you, however, buy your jeans 1 inch smaller in the waist ( I wear a 28 typically, and my waist is really a 29) . They say typical wear stretches your jeans 1/2-1 inch. My jeans fit perfect after a day of wear EVERY time and stay that way :)

        1. I worked at Buckle and you are seriously struggling on finding a good jean for you then you MUST go there. I have helped multiple women who tell me “ohh I’m impossible to fit” NO that is not true! If you dont want your butt hanging out= you need a midrise jean (BKE Culture, Kate, Payton all about 70-80) If you have bigger thighs and butt try a midrise the same as above and also Miss Me and Rock Revival come in a curve fit AND you go down one to two sizes! I’ve always shopped at Buckle and yes some items can be higher priced but the sales people will find you what you are looking for! Plus I am still wearing jeans that I got 6 years ago. And DO NOT DRY your JEANS. If you air dry them they last and will fit better longer!

And Taylor is right but some stretch more than others and NEVER buy jeans that are wayyy to tight..you won’t wear them!

        2. If you are over 20 the most important thing is the INSEAM (then the stretch, then the pocket size). If you have to keep pulling them up because of inseam and stretch, people will be trying to not look at you for fear of seeing your actual buttocks.

Not only are most of the jeans more expensive than an average (stay-at-home) woman can wear but any inseam under 9 inches isn’t dooable. The 9 inches is even hit or miss depending on your child-bearing status.

    2. Agreed on the fit of gap & old navy being small waisted, big hipped, etc. The only time I could wear gap jeans was their maternity jeans when I was pregnant & then, they were my favorite. I’m 5’3″ size 2 with narrow hips & muscular thighs – I find that the best fit for the price for me is American eagle, although I do feel odd sometimes shopping in the same store as my teenagers. American eagle artist jeans, skinny jeans & skinny kick jeans, all in “short” aren’t too tight on my thighs or too loose on my hips… The American eagle boyfriend jeans aren’t so great though, maybe if I got them in a smaller size, but the ones I have fall right off my hips & I’m always showing crack unless I wear a really long top.

    3. I have had the same experience. I wear the smallest size at gap or old navy and the waist is always too small with the hips and thighs way to big. But if I go up a size the waist fits and the thighs are baggy. On a positive note, now that the baggy boyfriend jeans are in I bought a pair of skinnys from old navy and I cuff them for the baggy boyfriend look. It’s more of and excuse not to spend close to $200 on a pair of trendy J brand jeans but these get the job done! Great post:)

      1. I wish you lived near me – I have all kinds of tinier-than-Gap-even-makes jeans in my inventory that NEVER get to be tried on! I love having tiny people come over because I get to see what they look like.

  3. I LOVE the Express Rerock jeans! I have never so much as tried them on but they look great in every photo! Wish I had some!

    1. They’re great, for sure! Not the most comfortable jeans in the world (slightly too low-cut for my taste), but they do look really good.

    1. They CAN be most certainly, but I hope it (and my past denim posts) also prove that the RIGHT jeans can be the most flattering thing in the world!

      1. First of all you get what you put in. Not a single pair of the jeans pictured are flattering. You get what you put in spending $30-$50 on jeans isn’t going to make ANYONES body look good. Try actually spending a little bit of money on jeans that will not only look better but out last all these cheap jeans. I am appalled that you even have LA Idol as a “good” jean

        1. Are you kidding me? How is OVER $50 a LITTLE BIT of money!? Please explain to me what world you live in, because apparently I missed this ship.

          1. Crika, yes! Agree! People who think over $50 is a “little bit of money” are either a.) people with few expenses (i.e., people with jobs, are single, and still live with their parents), b.) people with minimal expenses (i.e., a working couple who live in a modest apartment), or c.) people with significant amounts of cash. For those of us with children and real-life expenses (i.e., mortgage, student loans, daycare costs, car payments), $50 can go a long way in the jeans department!

        2. I would love to live in your world where I could spend over $50 on a pair of jeans without having to re-wear the same pair every day. Unfortunately, here in reality, that’s not an option. The blogger gave a great review of flattering options for a reasonable price. The fact that you think they all look awful makes me think you have no style and probably look ridiculous in your expensive jeans.

          1. @Tasha and Jess,
I wear nothing but “good jeans” I get them from Macy’s or Buckle and rarely find them for less than $100 a pair. I can factor this into my small budget by saving money. My husband and I both work hard, we have 4 kids, a mortgage and 3 cars. If I put $10-$15 dollars from each pay away for myself when I deposit my check, I can buy a new pair of jeans (that I can wear to work) every 6-10 weeks. I’m not saying I do buy jeans that often but when I do need or want a pair, I know how to factor it into my expenses. I feel more confident in clothing that flatters my body. It doesn’t matter how much a family makes, knowing how to budget and reward yourself for hard work is worth it. My jeans last for ever and are a worth while investment. This is the real world for me and I think my kids also appreciate a mom who takes pride in herself, has confidence, and provides for her family AND herself. I love this jean review and I’ll be sharing it with others!

        3. Wait…just how much do the *good* jeans cost? Because $50 for a pair of jeans is beyond what I’ll pay. And you’re saying spending THAT much on them will make me look like crap? Your definition of ‘a little bit of money’ and mine must be vastly different.

          1. I’ve gotten some of these on sale for as little as $30 – especially at Express. More expensive fabrics do make a huge difference, and I’ve learned over the years that it’s worth paying more for less amounts of clothes that will last and keep their shape. I used to buy tons of clothes at the most inexpensive price, but then I hated how all of them looked.

        4. I have jeans that cost less then $20 and jeans that I’ve spent $175 on. price is not always parallel to fit or quality. its about what fits your body type best. I have fallen victim to the Diva devil but learned my lesson and now wear them for house cleaning and yard work only!!!

          1. Alright so I’m going to dub myself a bit of a “denim connoisseur” and say that there is a HUGE difference between $20.00 jeans and $110.00 jeans and it’s NOT just in price. Save up and treat yourself to a really great pair of jeans, ones that you might feel are normally too expensive for you. You WILL feel like more than a million bucks. Also try shopping at stores that specialize in denim, ones that will not only have several different brands but several different styles in each brand and a huge selection of sizes in different waists and leg lengths.

          2. Honestly, i am a penny pincher. I am not one to spend much-to look at a price tag for one shirt that says $100 ..makes me sick. BUT, someone introduced me to Buckle. They have many different brands for different body types. The brand i like best is BKE. They have many different styles, and the sales associates always help me pick the best pair for me. They are in the 60-200 $$ range… but have lasted much longer than any of my others, and fit much nicer too. I wear them constantly! (They also do free alterations :D )

        5. Well said! Every one of these were AWFUL.
Wear what you feel comfortable in, physically, and mentally. If you feel comfortable with sequins, rhinestones, and extravagant embroidery on your BLUE JEANS (the most casual and comfortable of publicly accepted clothing) . . . I guess that’s what you’re comfortable in. Personally, I love my (authentic) mom jeans (from Goodwill). They flatten the stomach and my butt looks AMAZING in them. What’s the sense in not wearing what looks flattering because of some ridiculous stereotype given to a perfectly eye-appealing article of clothing?
          Don’t hate on Mom Jeans!!
P.S: Good brands are Express, Levi, any of the classics really. The denim holds you in place, doesn’t fall apart at the seams, and never looks . . . well, trashy is a strong word . . .

  4. love the comparisons, they really don’t look THAT bad until you see how it could look.

And am I crazy or (and I hope this isn’t offensive to the momma, but) did the baby leg get skinnier too?? AMAZING!

      1. Hmm. Now I find myself deeply examining Baby legs. I think it’s partially where I cropped his leg and partially because he has it folded up in one pic and stretched out in the other. But I guarantee it’s the same, unphotoshopped baby leg. :)

    1. Ha! I studied that pic and the pre-cropped version, and it’s just because he has his leg all squinched up in the first picture, and has it all stretched out in the second. But the pics are of the same baby, on the same day, with the same Mama, and with no photoshopping! I guess we’ll need to do a post next on the vast differentials in photographing baby legs. :)

    2. If you look at the original Subject C post (with the reddish hardwood floor), you can see that the woman has lots of freckles on her upper arms in both pics. It is clearly the same person (In that pic at least).

  5. You obviously have lots of time for shopping and trying on clothes. :) I’ve been in a mall exactly twice in 5 years. And once was for a flash-mob event, not shopping.

    1. @Sheree you obviously somehow missed all the pics of jeans? AND all the decision and comments, which would have given you the social q that: THAT IS THE TOPIC WE ARE ALL HERE FOR!oh you’ve been to the mall EXACTLY twice (why how did you manage to keep count) in 5 years. YAY for you! lets all give you a big round of applause…and for a “flash-mob” event! of course!oh wow arent you just SO interesting! heres a hot tip for you, go out into the world put yourself in real social situations and interact with people. then maybe you’ll stop coming off like a self important, passive aggressive, socially awkward twit

  6. ok, i went into this blog post hostile and unbelieving…
and I’m coming out a believer and ready to schedule a skype-date for jeans fitting! :)
Amen about GAP and ON jeans stretching. Seriously, by the end of the day my jeans crotch is hanging at mid-thigh. Gotta remedy that soon…if only the bootleg (and by that I mean fake imitation and NOT Diva Bootcut) 7 FAM jeans in Beijing were real, that’d be an easy fix for me! :)

  7. This is amazing. The differences are staggering. So, do you need a plus size model? I desperately need help in the jeans department. It’s nearly impossible to scavenge non-mom or non-bedazzled jeans in the big girl stores. When I find ones I like I usually buy three pairs. They are THAT rare. I hate jeans shopping.

    1. I’m with you on this one Beth! Just because I’m over a (ahem) certain age and plus-sized, does NOT mean I should have to wear ugly and uncomfortable jeans. Oh, for the days when we all wore Levi’s 501’s :)

    2. Sure! I’ve wanted to do a plus-sized post for a while, and I have another willing model as well, but you’re right – it’s much harder. I currently have one style of jeans in my stock that I really love in the plus-sizes – they’re flattering, the pockets are right, and they fit nicely. But one style isn’t much of a selection!

But yes, I’d love to have you for a model!

      1. I would love for you to share the brand name of the plus size jeans you have in stock. I also need help in the plus size dept. I wear a 20 but am only 5’3″ which poses a problem becuase I am not petite or regular length. I could totally hem them but that seems to fussy!

        1. Because most designer jean companies regretfully don’t make plus sized jeans, pretty much all of the plus sized jeans that we stock are Vault’s brands (which are really great, but are exclusively sold at Vault parties or online). Some are better than others, but my favorite pair that looks the most flattering is the X Denim TD1004. I have also heard great things about Emerson Edward’s Plus sizes, but haven’t gotten to see them in person yet.

          1. I would Totally also offer up my plus sized booty to the cause of finding finding flattering Jeans in plus sizes! Now that I’ve seen this post I’m really afraid to go look at my butt in the mirror in my current Jeans;)

              1. Would love to see this. I definitely fall into the “mom jean” trap. I am much older than any of you, but would still like to have flattering jeans in a larger size. Where do you get the ‘alternative’ jean brands you have modeled? I would certainly try them on!

                1. I’m hoping to start my sequel post research this weekend! The jeans in the photos can be found either through Vault, at Express stores, or at department stores.

                2. Lori, you should really try jeans from Buckle. At first glance you might think it’s a teenager store, but it’s way more than that! I am in my late 30’s and both my parents only buy Buckle jeans. They even have a call ahead service where you can tell the employees, your size, inseam and what you are looking for and they will have options pulled for you before you get there. awesome… takes part of the hassle out of the dreaded jean shopping! Good Luck!

                1. I typically tell petite people don’t be afraid to get jeans hemmed. It’s worth it to get a quality pair – so check the fit well everywhere else, and pay $10 to get the length hemmed! With that being said, though, Express does have nice petites.

          2. I’m plus sized as well. Short waisted and skinny legs. I find most plus size jeans come up above my belly button. Uncomfortable!! My favorite jeans are from Torrid. They are called Source of Wisdom. They have several different styles. I haven’t been jean shopping in a while, but I always seem to go back to this brand.

          3. I am beyond plus (OK 24, whatever) and I have a really great pair of Seven 7 from LB that I am kind of wearing out because they fit so nicely. Never knew my butt, as big as it is, could actually look decent in a pair of jeans.

        2. There is a super easy way to hem jeans. My friend found it on PINTRIST (PINTREST? sp) and my mom hemmed up some jeans for the both of us in less than 20min! I believe it’s called a French cuff. I hope that’s right. Look for it! You can’t even tell they’ve been hemmed!
          Not a computer mama, sorry.

        3. Britney

I get my good quality jeans at Lane Bryant

They are not cheap BUT they have an excellent selection, and look really good. I’m a size 24 5 foot 4. What you need to do is find one that fits you, even if it’s a little long and then take them to a tailor. It won’t cost that much to hem them professionally for you. I have heard good things about Torrid as well, but don’t have one near me. (Torrid and Lane Bryant Jeans to me look very similar, Shirts and blouses, Torrid is a bit more revealing).

I have jeans from Lane Bryant 6 years going strong.

          1. I used to love the older Lane Bryant jeans, but I haven’t bought new pairs in years. I have found that the Lane Bryant Jeans of late are absolutely terrible! They are too long for me and I’m 5 foot 7! They stretch out horribly, they do nothing for my butt, and they are over priced for what you get. Not only that, but they keep changing the fit, and sizing and they are no longer going to be carrying petite or tall sizes-all their pants and jeans will be average length only.

      2. I’d love to be a model too :) I have found the best jeans at Target (Mossimo brand) in sizes 14 and 16, and I think they may have higher sizes as well. I get compliments every time I wear them!

          1. I’m a plus-size (18/20) who recently went from being a M-F office worker to being a M-F work-at-home person, so I’ve got exactly 2 pairs of jeans in my wardrobe (since that’s all I really needed before). Plus-size jeans have been exceptionally difficult for me to find, because (a) there aren’t nearly as many to choose from as regular sizes, and (b) most of those continue to be low-rise styles, which very, very few plus-size girls can actually pull off (yours truly included).

I’ve typically ended up buying either Levis (inexpensive, last forever, comfortable, and very casual in look) or Talbots (more expensive, also last forever, also comfortable, but dressier in look). No idea if either of those brands look GOOD though (I think they do, but what do I know?)

I’m in Huntsville, and I’d be happy to help out with a plus-size edition of your hunt for the perfect denim. Shoot me an email if you still need more models. Either way, I’m going out and buying new jeans soon. :)

    3. Have you tried Torrid? I don’t know if you have one where you live, but it is a great store. They also have a good website, if you don’t live near one. They have lots of brands of jeans, including their own brand, and are geared towards cute clothes that don’t look frumpy for those that are plus sized. I love it. They are a little on the more expensive side, but have quality clothes and a good return policy if you order online I believe. Check it out! Hope that helps.

      1. Same problem here – I don’t believe I can fit into any of these makes at an 18-20 (long torso, huge hips and thighs, and, now, a 4 pregnancy c-sction pooch). While I’m trying to lose weight, I need jeans in the meantime. :(
Lucked out, got 2 pair of Calvin Klein jeans in a consignment shop at $7/pr and sewed them into the shape I needed but, still, it’d be nice not to have to always “edit”!

        1. Maurice’s has a lot of jeans from sizes 00 to like 28 that look like your “good” jeans pictured above.

I have to say I really think the heavy top stitching and sandblasting and ornamentation can look incredibly age inappropriate. I’m 26 and I feel silly in them, like im back in college. I’m sure it has to do with personal comfort and style, but at a certain point to me it looks like anyone over 12 wearing Juicy Couture velour.

    4. I get my jeans at Lane Bryant. They are the only jeans I can find to fit my size 14 large bum and thighs, with a tiny waist. Their T3 jeans are awesome (although they do stretch out, so buy a size smaller). The difference is amazing when you get jeans that tighten and lift your rear. Plus LB always has coupons, so I spend about $30 per pair.

  8. I use to love Gap but haven’t been there in years. I also use to buy most of my son’s clothing at Old Navy, but except for a couple of things, I never could find anything that fit me well. Express is hit or miss. They have nothing I like for years then suddenly one year they have several things I love and I buy one in every color. In the pictures above I like Express and 7FAM the best. My favorite jeans are Jbrand jeans. Also a few years ago I found some really cute great fitting jeans at Buckle. I don’t know how they are now though. I am way older than you but I have never even heard of mom jeans. I would totally stay away from those! :)

  9. I think you should offer a prize giveaway of a weekend shopping trip to revamp a poor mama’s jean wardrobe with your expert butt-helping advice.

  10. Oh! Also, I have a challenge for you! I have to wear khaki colored pants for working at Target, and as I would really rather be in jeans I find this to be a slightly painful daily ordeal, and would absolutely love you forever if you could find me a brand/style of khaki pants that don’t suck on the butt-flattering issue (have you SEEN what landsend passes off for women’s khaki pants??? my own MOTHER bought me a pair! *sob*)

    1. Ah, yes. Khaki pants are hard. Hm… the best ones I’ve found are definitely Express (they fit like dress pants rather than khaki pants) – if you combine coupons and sales, you can get a good deal. Banana Republic aren’t too bad sometimes either, but Express is definitely better.

  11. This was great, my kids tell me I have mom but with some jeans.Didn’t have a clue as to what they were talking about.

  12. I always end up at Old Navy because they are cheap, but I’m never fully satisfied. Can you come to KC and fit me for jeans–PLEASE??

  13. Ugh! I wear Old Navy jeans, mostly because I have a very hard time finding jeans; why oh why is it so hard to find jeans that aren’t low rise/extra low rise!!!???
I love the ones you sell, but saddly my budget can’t afford them.

    1. I understand – it’s hard to find the perfect pair. Designer Jeans through Vault are $48-92. If that’s too much, then I usually suggest to people to try Express – with a coupon and a sale combined, you can usually get a pretty good deal, and they have the next best thing to designer jeans in my opinion.

  14. Oh my. That romper elastic is crazy! I have never bought jeans from Gap but I’ve realized the error of my ways with Old Navy jeans. I might be butt texting you in about three months when it’s time for me to shop for new jeans. :)

  15. I concur with your caveat that different body types make jeans look different. My mom loves the ON Sweetheart jeans, and I own a pair or two myself. Granted, I’ve never photographed my hiney while wearing them, but I don’t think they look particularly momish on my mom. I’ll deduce that our tooshies are more sizable than yours so the pockets seems more propotionate. ;)

    1. It’s all about the individual butt, for sure! But subjecting one’s butt to photography can be a bit eye-opening… I’m still recovering from looking at all of those photos of me!

  16. Sorry to say that I think you’re very wrong. Everyone I know always remarks how wonderful Gap jeans are, particularly curvy. Perhaps you are right, different strokes for different folks (and different body shapes, I guess). I have a photo of my butt in gap curvy and gap long and lean that are the right size, and my butt looks great (compared to jeans in other places).

    1. As I illustrated in the Long and Lean section, there are definitely exceptions to the rule, and perhaps it is a matter of different tastes, as well. I’m just continuously shocked by the number of people who are thrilled when they see the difference that is made when they get out of Gap and Old Navy jeans.

  17. Haha, You’re my favorite! I just sold all my Old Navy jeans to a consignment store, are target jeans mom jeans? Will you please vacation in Denver soon so you can teach me your ways of jean shopping?

    1. Tiffany I usually always stick with American Eagle Jeans. I think they fit the best out of any jeans I have ever owned, other than $150 Rock & Republic jeans that I did not purchase, they were a gift. Usually, I can get American Eagle jeans for $30 or less when there is a sale which is all the time, their clearance section is great and sometimes the website has more of a selection. They do have alot of low rise, which I do not prefer, but also have some mid rise and higher rising jeans that are extremely comfortable and flattering :)

  18. Rachel – thank you for continuously sacrificing your butt to the greater good. (That jumpsuit was horrific, and I hope you washed your hands after you tried it on.) When I finally have the strength to slip out of the yoga pants into something less comfortable (ie. “real” pants), I’ll be bringing printouts of your posts with me.

    1. You’re welcome. I appreciate that you appreciate the sacrifice and pain that it is to advertise one’s butt in such an unattractive manner.

  19. I think you look quite cute in the romper! :)

Awesome post! I too wish you could vacation (holiday) near me and we could jeans shop. Jeans shopping with for my husband is a bit of a trail too, and we have to do it more ‘cos he wears jeans to work everyday so he actually wears them out. I only wear jeans a bit on the weekends so mine last years.

    1. I’d adore to holiday near you – however, until the kids get a bit older, flying overseas isn’t exactly the most practical of decisions. One day, though. One day.

  20. Oh my gosh. I need help! I need to butt text you. Haha! Ok, seriously, that gap romper was hideous. You are brave for even putting it on. I can’t believe people would actually buy and wear that. Obviously, we don’t live close to each other, but how would one receive a denim makeover? And are those express rerock jeans from the express store?

    1. How to receive a denim makeover: I can help you long distance, or I can get you in touch with a Vault rep near you.

The Express Rerock jeans are from Express. They’re expensive ($98) but Express often has their jeans on sale, and they also have really great coupons if you get on their mailing list. So if you can combine the two, you can usually get them for half price.

  21. oh no oh no oh no oh no…

I’m a long time wearer of Gap long and lean jeans….

I’m so scared. I never thought I’d fall into the mom jean trap. I laugh secretly at others in mom jeans. The horrors that I might actually be a mom jean victim! *hanging head in shame*

I will be having my hubby photograph my butt in those jeans so I can assess. And then you’ll have to add Kentucky onto your long list of places to visit. Maybe you could become a traveling jean salesman and make house calls to all your loyal, woefully afraid of mom jean, blog readers ;).

P.S. That jumpsuit? Wow. Words cannot express.

    1. It would be fun to be a traveling denim helper! Unfortunately, I don’t think it would be as fun for the kids. Feel free to send me your butt pics for assessment! :D

    2. that is so awesome, really! thank you for posting. I am a 38 year old mom of two who USED to think all GAP jeans look great. I mean, it is GAP after all!??
      LOL

I’m going out shopping for some new cool jeans tomorrow ;0

  22. Love this post! I do confess to loving my Gap Long and Leans, though.

To be honest, my problem with a lot of the “nicer” jeans you posted is that the detail on the pockets just seems super-tacky to me. I know that makes me sound like I’m 50 years old, but the bling and the wild stitching, to me, make the jeans look cheap and like something you’d see on a teenager at the mall.

So regardless of how well they handle the “mom butt” issue, the pockets on a lot of them would be a deal-breaker for me. (7 For All Mankind is definitely an exception to this — their pocket detailing is very reasonable).

    1. I get that some people don’t like pocket stitching. It depends on the type for me, and I can totally appreciate a classic pair with nothing on them (like the 7 for all Mankind). There are a bunch of both types. Good brands with minimal stitching are: J Brand, Citizens of Humanity, 7 for All Mankind.

      1. WOW!!! Amazing differences there! I usually have a hard time finding a jean that fits my booty and will not be huge on my waist. My favorites are my Lucky jeans and White House Black Marjet jeans. I agree about the crazy pockets though. Some of these new “trendy” jeans look as though they are stitched with yarn!

  23. Oh, noooo! Old Navy jeans are what I wear! With the exception of one pair of Arizona jeans from forever ago that really fit me well. I’ve never been super happy with the ON jeans, but part of my problem is that I wear an 18, so I’m plus size, but I don’t really have much of a butt. So jeans at ‘plus’ stores like Maurices don’t fit me at all, and regular stores like the Buckle don’t sell in my size. The butt of all my jeans (except the Arizona) are all saggy b/c I don’t have much going on. AND the legs are all baggy. I guess b/c they think if you need an 18 you also have giant tree trunk legs. I hate to buy online b/c I really need to try on-any suggestions?

        1. I live in Wichita Falls, TX. Cost, $50-75 would be about my goal. I know quality is more expensive, and I obviously will keep a pair for a long time, but I just have a hard time parting with much more than that for a pair of pants.

          1. Hm. We’re just starting to get jeans in at Vault in size 18 that I like how they fit, so I could get you in touch with a Vault rep around you. They usually run $50-70. As far as other options, I’m not sure. Express is my go-to option, but I just checked, and they go up to 14. Their sizing IS very generous, though – I wear two sizes smaller there than I do at other stores. But I also do at Gap and Old Navy, so the sizes would be similar.

This isn’t very helpful, I know – I need to do some further intense research on these sizes and find some great options.

          2. Rebecca, Try to find some Paige Premium Denim in a size 34. They are great for those with a little butt. As a size 18, you should be able to fit into a 34 even though that is a misses sized line – they have them on their website and sometimes Nordstroms has them online.

    1. I totally feel you. This is my exact problem. I used to LOVE silver suki cut denim, they had a wider waist, slim hips and thighs and still a nice leg width and they were long enough (as long as I wasn’t wearing skyscraper heels). It seems they have changed the construction though. If you can find them in cotton /polyester blend, TRY THEM!!! The ones with stretch are a no go. They run around 60-80 reg price. Higher price dept stores carry them (or mine at Von maur) and Maurice’s sometimes does as well. You might try hydraulic brand too. Again I found those at Maurice’s and they had good length and some of the cuts were slimmer with a generous waist. I haven’t had much luck recently. Hopefully once it gets colder there will be more of a selection?? Right now my one pair of jeans that fit are a pair of ON skinny jeans and I’m afraid to put them on after reading this. I’ve lost another 10 lbs (40 total since march) so they definitely sag in the rear now. :/

  24. Ouch.

I, too, thought I was safe with my Gap jeans. I’m afraid I’m priced right out of anything more expensive. Looks like it’s skirts for the rest of the summer and, then, lots and lots of tunics for the colder months.

    1. Not necessarily! Good jeans don’t have to cost too much. All of the Gap jeans I tried on were $69.50. I’m sure most people get them on sale, but there are two comparable options:

      1. Express. They are in the same price range and also have great sales/coupons. And their jeans are nearly fool-proof flattering.
      2. Vault. Our jeans are $48-92, so depending on the pair, that puts them right in the Gap price market, but for designer brands (including most of the ones pictured in this post).

  25. I found your blog due to the Downton Abbey… umm, chart?… but am seriously considering forwarding this to my mum. Gap is NOT doing her any favours. Do you think that will get me grounded?

    1. Perhaps if you FIRST took her shopping and showed her the amazing results, it would soften the blow….

That’s what I always do with people. I make sure they see the “after” before I unveil the questionableness of the “before”. :)

  26. Hi Rachel,
I notice your blog says you carry Vault Denim. I have never heard of that brand before. I am always looking for jeans that fit me and can NEVER find any. I have a serious case of my hips being way wider than my waist and whenever I try on jeans they always make me look deformed. What would you suggest from Vault or any other brand of jean?. I mean we are talking 26 inch waist and 39 inch hip. It’s hard to find anything that fits that is flattering. Thanks.

    1. Hi Nicole,

Vault is a company that carries many different brands of designer jeans at half price – they buy up all of the overstocks of all of the well-known brands and sell them at in-home parties and open houses through their independent reps. They also make some of their own brands as well.

As far as brands that might work for you, I would try Express Eva or Stella cut, J Brand, 7 for all Mankind, Alter Ego Denim…

If none of those work, a lot of people have this same problem, and several have told me that they’ve gotten the waist taken in by a tailor and that has really helped.

Let me know if you have any other questions!
      Rachel

    2. Levis bold curve (or demi curve). I am bold. Look for an outlet near you – I’ve gotten jeans for $10-$20 on sale! I struggled with this issue forever, I’d always get the waist taken in, but then the crotch would sag a little, and they still weren’t right. I went to a Levis store b/c I heard about the bold curve. I was 100% skeptical b/c I’m 32 & it’s been a struggle for sooooo long. I almost cried I was so happy! Fit like a glove!!! And they don’t stretch out, you could wear them so many times without washing. You have to go!! I am still so excited & it’s been over a year since I stumbled on them!!! Tell everybody so they don’t stop making them!
      Good Luck

      1. I bought the same jeans on Amazon! Unfortunately, the only pair in my size that they had in stock turned out to have back pockets with flaps. I hate those, since you either can’t use the pockets, or they just hang open. And it seems like the corners of the pocket flaps always curve up and stick out. So, I returned them, but they did seem very flattering. Finding jeans in “long” and “curvy” is tough.

        1. Just a tip – for any pockets/cuffs that stick out & won’t behave, I just sew them in place – I never use the pockets anyway – so I don’t care if they get sewn shut. Just an idea….

  27. I agree that all the other jeans look much better on you! Hoewever, I would like to just throw out there that some of them were more for a teenager ( I think it’s the embellished pockets). I am 32, and consider myself pretty stylish (skinny jeans with peep toes, etc). I don’t own a single pair of jeans that don’t fit me properly & aren’t in style, but some of those are just way too young for a 30 something. Anyway, I am very small waisted but have a bit of a booty & thighs. Levis has been my savior – I strongly recommend checking them out. The quality is great, I can wear them so many times without washing (so many stretch out!), and the colors & cuts are fashionable. If you get the gap at the waist like I do, go for the bold curve, I stumbled on them about a year ago & can’t believe how long I was tortured jean shopping. I’ll never go anywhere else now that I finally found jeans that cater to us small waisted, big bootied girls!!!!

  28. My question is…

I just had my second child. I had one right after the other so I didn’t have a chance to Get into shape. I’ve always been on the bigger side, I wear 15-17 depending on the brand. That being said I thought I always had the right jean because it was the only one that fit. Arizona jeans from the juniors section in jcpenny. I’m 23 so I don’t feel like I should have to wear mom jeans even though I am a mom. But they stretch bad… And it annoys the crap outta me.

Are those places you mentioned plus size friendly? Also, can anyone suggest a place for me to look and try on jeans without feeling fat? Target lies… Their 18 is too small for me, haha.

  29. I have NEVER found a pair of GAP jeans that fit me remotely reasonably. I have bought one pair of Old Navy jeans that seemed to fit me well in the dressing room, but I got home and discovered the stretching issue. Even after washing them they never went back to the original shape and when I would try to wear them after 30 minutes I got the sag going on.

I prefer Lucky (but can’ afford them) and I’ve found some great jeans the Guess outlet in Opry Mills. I have really thick thighs and to fit them I end up with jeans that don’t fit in the waste or hips. Any suggestions?

  30. Ha ha, wonderful post! A perfect sequel for the fabulous Dreaded Long-butt Essay :)

I’d second the request by another commenter that I’ve NEVER found a good pair of khaki pants. I have large thighs, and for some reason I can find jeans (Lurve me some Express curvy’s!) but never khakis. I want something that’s made of a slig
htly thicker fabric so it doesn’t cling to all the unfortunate spots. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Also, thanks for dropping the names of two other jeans that make styles in curvy. My waist is 10 inches smaller than my thighs, so this is a big deal for me :)

    1. This is difficult, for sure. It seems like all khakis have gotten infinitely thinner (in material structure) over the past decade. As I told the last person who asked, I wear exclusively Express dress pants. They have them that are khaki in color, but “dress pant” in material. They’re flattering without being stick-to-you-ish.

    1. You’re welcome to send me a picture! But only if you’re willing to go shopping afterward. I don’t want to run the risk of having to tell you that they are indeed Mom Jeans unless you’re willing to do something about it. I’ll be glad to give you some suggestions of where to go, but I can’t leave you floundering in Mom Jean despair! :)

  31. Wow! is all I can say. I’ve never heard of alot of those brands you were trying on. Where do you buy them all? 7Fam, Hudson Boot, LA Idol, Antik, etc.
Also, what would you suggest for me? My problem is my waist is bigger than my legs so often stretch is the best fit for me. If I buy jeans to fit comfortably on my waist then often my legs are too baggy. If I find jeans that would look good on my legs, they are a little tight in the waist. I’m wider w/ a flat butt and small legs. Thanks. Oh, and what is the return policy on Vault?

    1. All of the jeans I showed (other than Gap and Old Navy) were my jeans – the majority bought through Vault.

William Rast tends to have a roomy waist, and is a very flattering fit. Also, 7 For All Mankind tends to fit nicely.

Vault’s return policy is a 15 day exchange policy, no returns.

      Hope that helps!

  32. My sister and I joke about plus size denim having rhinestones on the pockets. We call them, “Can’t Miss Me” jeans!

  33. Any suggestions for tall jeans? I need a 34″ inseam and I have a very long rise. (Seriously, I go try on “sits at waist” jeans and on me they’re “barely covers hips” jeans.) I’m also a size 16/18, so that’s a tricky enough size all on it’s own.

    1. Most designer jeans are super long. Rock and Republic, 7 For all Mankind, Citizens of Humanity – all of these will be around 34″. As far as a higher rise, I would see if William Rast runs long enough – they’re a little more generous in rise. Some of the mainline brands are starting to do higher rise, now, too – I know I saw one the other day in 7 For All Mankind, and J Brand also has a higher rise.

Also – they’re exclusively at Vault Denim parties (for more info, click here: http://www.graspingforobjectivity.com/vault-denim ), but there’s a really great pair of X Denim jeans in 16-24 right now – the pockets are in the right place AND the rise is higher. They’re the only pair in 16+ that I’ve liked in a long while. Depending on where you are, I can help you find a Vault rep…

I know I’ve thrown a ton of brands out there – I hope one of them helps!!

      1. Good to know! I’ve got a 35″ inseam. I used to do ok with the Gap long and lean but anymore the knees or hips are never in the right place. The only jeans I’ve found that fit right are from Long Tall Sally, I actually have to get 2 sizes smaller in their jeans because the hips and knees are all in the right spots! I’m also hour glass (with a crazy long torso) so I’ve always had to get jeans to fit my hips instead of waist. I’m glad there are some other brands I can check out now too!

      2. I too have a long inseam and have found that LA IDOL jeans run long. And you can find them for about $45. Also if you look for western riding jeans they also run long. Guess it`s so they cover the cowboy boots while riding. But LA Idol are my fave. Much cheaper than Miss Me jeans and I like the styles better.

  34. I am in shock that there was such a difference in how they look from behind!! I have never worn ON jeans as they gap horribly at the waist on me. Gap I never bothered to try as they never were big enough. I have lost 30lb since January and am dreading shopping for jeans this fall. I gather that you recommend Express. Anywhere else?
Also, I will need your number so I can txt you pics and make sure I don’t get any hideous mom jeans. After working my butt off (literally) I want it to look good! :)

    1. Congratulations on the weight loss!! I lost a bunch last year, and my reward was 3 pairs of nice jeans.

My biggest recommendation is to find a Vault Denim rep near you – you can try on all the designer brands (at half price) and see what works best for you, and get an expert’s advice. (for more information, click here: http://www.graspingforobjectivity.com/vault-denim). Let me know if you want my help in finding one!

  35. Do you have good suggestions for tall plus size jeans? I wear a 16-18 in sweetheart at old navy. I recently lost 40 lbs to get down to this size. I can’t do very low rise due to carrying my weight in my tummy, and I have slim hips and super thin 33″ inseam legs. Help!?
    Thanks!!

    1. Congratulations on the weight loss! I would try William Rast, if you can find them. I know it’s hard to find one that fits a tummy good and doesn’t look too baggy on the legs. Finding jeans that have more stretch usually helps. Vault Denim carries a couple of brands that might work – X Denim and Alter Ego. Both of these work well for bigger tummy / smaller legs. Let me know if you want me to help you find a rep near you!

  36. Thank you. I have always had the hardest time buying jeans, even before becoming a mom. I have, what I call, anti-butt. I swear it sinks in instead of out. I have been dropping weight like crazy for the past few months and just got to buy myself a new pair of jeans, in the next size down. I never thought of having mom butt but after reading this I feel like I should send in a picture of my back end. Thank you for all the comparison photos. I’m glad we don’t have a old navy or a gap to tempt me into gateway mom jeans.

  37. I have seen the light. Putting away my gap silver card now. Looks like I’ll be in Nordstrom hunting for new fall jeans soon.

    1. Yes, Express is great! They’re carrying ReRock now, which are a level up from their normal jeans. They’re more expensive, but their coupons and sales still apply.

      Good luck!!

  38. Great info! I have been a Silver brand jeans fan for 15 years, I love that their 34 & 36 waist sizes are still low rise, and they offer many different lengths. After having my baby, however, I have quite the “spare tire” and a large flabby tummy that hangs over my jeans waist. I can’t wear high or mid rise because they don’t fit my larger waist and the flab looks awful under the waist of the jeans. Any suggestions on denim to help me? Thanks!

    1. Hm. I would try to find a thicker waistband, but one that wasn’t too tight. I’ve noticed that tighter waists create muffin top, whereas looser waists help hide it. William Rast has generous waists, as does Express and Emerson Edwards.

      Hope that helps!

  39. I think your whole article is total crap. You do not have the right (or knowledge) to say that every pair of Gap jean is a mom-jean. Just because these jeans look horrible on you, dont mean they look horrible on everyone. What ever happened to constructive journalism?

    1. You’re right – basing that sort of conclusion on one body would not be right at all. Which is exactly why I included three other people in my post as well.

I also made sure to state the caveat twice that it’s not true for every body, and included a photo of someone on which they were very flattering.

So I’m not sure where the unconstructive journalism is, but blogs are for opinions, anyway – people are always welcome to disagree with me.

    2. Uh oh, looks like SOMEBODY is a Gap exec with her knickers in a twist!! What a flaming douche you are…learn a few manners before you go out trolling, whydontcha?? This post is HELPING PEOPLE, and if you don’t like it, then don’t look at it!

  40. I never want anyone to look at my backside…ever!

I think you should stock up on the denim jumper – how beautifully attractive – sorta like overalls!

  41. I was a Gap gal all the way. I had the body for it, even after four kids, Gap Long and Lean looked like they were invented for me! And then there was the fifth child and the Gap L&L are no longer a pretty fit, even the exact same ones I had in my closet before I had baby 5. I have a pair of 7FAM that I snagged at a thrift store (holla!) and I may never look back. I am THRILLED about this post, though, because I need to jean shop but literally had no idea where to begin. Thank you SO much for the run down on your faves!

    1. Interesting! It’s bizarre how that can change, isn’t it? And good job on the 7FAM thrift store find!!!

Good luck with shopping – let me know how it goes!

  42. Dang, I love Gap and am wearing those jeans right now. I like where the waistline lands because it prevents a muffin top. And I agree they they stretch after one wear but I know that everytime I’ve tried on jeans there they always warn me in the fitting rooms so it hasn’t been a total surprise. And although not every style fits me I can usually count on the always skinny in a dark denim. But I’m for sure going to go home and try on every pair before the next time I think about purchasing another.

  43. I am completly annoyed at the fact that most jeans seem to be made for girls that have zero thighs or ass and then some sort of huge waist.

Jeans always end up being huge in the waist for me and then tight in the thighs. I tried on bigger sizes, and I thought it was a cruel joke that the thigh area did not get bigger, but horror among horrors the waist just got bigger and bigger.

Any recommendations for us pear shaped girls ?!

    1. Hmm… Have you tried Express Stella cut? They’ve always seemed to have a bit more room. But they did just make a change in the fabrics and cuts, and I haven’t tried them since to see how the changes turned out. It’s hard to tell without trying on a whole bunch, but I think LA Idol is also possibly a good fit.

  44. This was hilarious and interesting! I’m that rare person that does look good in the Gap Long and Lean…at least most of the time. Their cuts vary from year to year. But right now, post baby #2, they work for me! And I am someone that would never feel comfortable wearing skinny jeans. My upper thighs are just too thick–also having trouble finding non-bermuda shorts to look right this year!
I was just curious…what brands/cuts do you recommend trying. Every time I consider looking somewhere else, i get incredibly overwhelmed…like Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack, for example. The last time I was at NR, I tried on several pairs and was so discouraged. Not flattering at all. So I clearly don’t know what to look for!

    1. You might have the same body as my friend that looks great in Long and Lean! They definitely do work on some people.

My favorite brands are 7 For All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, Rock and Republic, and Antik. I also like Express jeans. But don’t get discouraged – it’s not your body, it’s the jeans! Once you find the perfect pair, you’ll know it.

      Hope that helps!

  45. Great blog! I am a serious jeans girls but never knew
The difference between a pair of bad jeans and good ones.
Thanks for clarifying. Next time I’ll know what to look for.

  46. Gap Jeans are the only ones that fit me right. I have a tiny waist with curvy hips and most jeans gape at the waist. Plus they are one of the jeans that don’t have stupid bling on the ass or flap pockets. I promise I do not look like a mom in my skinny jeans.

    1. The waistband gaping problem is SUCH a vast problem with so many people! Half the people I see have that issue, and I can’t for the life of me figure out why jeans makers can’t figure out how to stop it.

However, some brands are starting to make their waistbands actually higher in the back than in the front – this seems to really help combat the problem. So if you ever hold up a pair of jeans and the back is an inch or two higher than the front, try them on and let me know if my theory is right!

  47. I thought my body was always the problem with jeans! (I’ve always gone to Gap or Old Navy for jeans) This is changing my life.

  48. Can you come shopping with me. PLEASE!?
I am a 25 year old mom with 2 kids (3 and 4 year old boys). When I go shopping I find myself in this awful, hellish limbo. I am 5’0 and I have hips like I have birthed 2 children. Juniors jeans are not made for my hips and short statue and and “misses” jeans are mom jeans or have full on elastic. I finally found decent jeans at ON, but after reading this I am SCARED to put them on and see what they look like from the rear! 3rd butt?! Wide pockets?! YIKES! AHH! What if I have MOM JEANS in my dresser!? Just when I thought I had finally settled on something!! Oh no. Please come be my personal assistant? I’ll be your best friend!
    Thanks,
    Now Desperate Mom in VA.

    1. Ha! I wish I could. I would say don’t be afraid to get jeans hemmed!! Good jeans usually don’t come in lengths – I am not short and I still have to get all mine hemmed. It’s usually $10-20, and worth every penny to get great jeans.

However, try Express – they do have short, and their hips are usually a bit more generous (in the Stella cut especially).

      Hope that helps!

  49. Okay you are purely awesome! This was such a great read and so well laid out. Every time I see this topic in a magazine I get it but I have never had it so well explained! I personally don’t think I have had a good pair of jeans since Bongo’s were around cause they gave me a butt! Now I’m plus size and I just pick up whatever is at Wal-Mart cause i’m so darn tired from 3 kids and I need them for casual Friday. Needless to say I have been inspired!

  50. I for sure get your point on the mom jeans. But an you suggest anything that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. The most I could possibly stretch to pay for pants is $20 and that is no where near the realm of the jeans you suggested.

Is there a good bargain non-mom jean to be found or are those of us who are broke just out of luck?

    1. Hmm. This one might take some research. The closest thing I can get to is Express or American Eagle, when you combine their sales and a coupon. I’ll see what I can dig up!

      1. I am not a jeans expert but I do pride myself on the ability to find a good deal! Most of the brands mentioned can be found at consignment shops for a fraction of the orginal cost. If you live in a college town, or near one like I do, you can find amazing deals. I really think college kids talk their parents into buying expensive jeans so that they can sell them to consignment shops for beer, food, and cheap jeans! :) Also, thrift stores will also have them from time to time. You just have to be willing to go search. My best advice for shopping at any of them is to go alone. No husbands, children, even friends. Friends LIE, husbands are always ready to go, and kids are insane! :)

  51. I fell out of love with Old Navy once I packed on a few pounds. A recent visit to the Old Navy dressing room post baby had me leaving there cursing mother nature & all things denim!

A friend told me years ago Old Navy is the cheap version of Gap & The Gap is a cheap version of Banana Republic. They are all owned by the same company. (Maybe it’s the same jeans with just a different embroidery on the back pockets.)

      1. Ouch, I get my livelihood from them, so if your going to tack on BR to the insult list then add Piperlime and Athleta… cause even bad advertisement has people talking! Friends and Family for Gap is coming up 8/9, you can get 40% off… so I suggest everyone make a purchase and try those Jeans for yourself…shameless I know :)

    1. Definitely not the same jeans. I’ve worked at Banana Republic for nearly 10 years and am now at the Gap. And while I don’t completely agree with the idea that Gap makes a gateway mom jean, I don’t totally disagree with it either.

Having worked in retail for so long, still doesn’t make me an expert, but I’ve learned a thing or two about denim shopping. It’s all about fit. You are right about that. What works for one may not work for another. I have women leave my fitting room every day without a pair of jeans, because as a woman, you have to try on 700 pair to find the one perfect pair for you. You also never know where that pair will come from, it could be Express, Target, or Godforbid The Gap (but seriously, it probably won’t come from Old Navy, I’m just sayin’)

While the pocket location and size is key for “mom jean” criteria, there are so many others things to look at as well to find the perfect jean… Rise of the jean, where it hits you on your waist, where it hugs your curves, where it starts to flare out, how wide the flare is and the proportion to your body. Thats why there are so many denim companies with so many different fits, this is not a one size fits all world, ladies.

If you are shopping for a new pair of jeans, don’t discount the Gap until you have tried it for yourself, we might just surprises you. :)

And PS- as someone who works for the company, I still tend to wear BR jeans, it’s what works for my body type, shape and size, the “sexy boyfriend” is actually a very cute style on all types of women (only that one style had those dang pleats) and the “original fit” is terrible. ;)

  52. So…this is very embarrassing but I’m 21 and….sigh I realize that I have been wearing gateway mom jeans. I have a lot of hmmm junk in the junk and I realized that my JEANS have not been helping at all. I’m consider myself well dressed individual BUT these posts are like on “What not to wear” where Clinton & Stacy tell the people how bad they look and the people can’t see. I COULDN’T SEE IT…and I’m still struggling…

Do you know any brands of jeans that are good for a size 12???? Target jeans look awful, and now no Old Navy…I’m in desperate need of help!!!

    1. THE most flattering jeans I’ve seen on people with a bit of junk in the trunk are LA Idol. They look phenomenal. Preferably the ones without the bling – just the stitching. Also, I know I keep telling people this – but Express are really nearly universally flattering.

  53. I (heart) you. Reading this just boosted this mom of three’s self-esteem….. it’s not my butt, it’s my jeans! Goin’ shopping TODAY!!!

  54. Hilarious post!!!! I actually have never once tried on a pari of Gap jeans, but I have tried on my fair share of O.N. jeans and have never. bought. one. pair. Because they all are awful!!!! ABsolutely awful. I usually get my jeans from NY&Co because they have the “petite” cuts and I’m pretty short so it helps me out :) But even some of their cuts can have a borderline mom jean look, so I always have to be vigilant!

  55. i dont think i’ve seen so many pictures of butts before. but this post is eye opening. life changing. i tried on all my jeans and actually my pre-mom jeans are 3 sizes smaller than the ones i have been wearing and they fit! i look and feel like i’ve lost 15 lbs just by changing my pants. and my butt looks happy. big plus.
i think i might actually..for the first time in 20 months, do my hair..paint my nails..oh my.:)

  56. Love this post! I recently lost my baby weight (happy dance) so I have been looking for new jeans. A great read before shopping!!

  57. this was a really funny and well written post, but the real problem here is pocket placement and size, it’s obvious that you like a smaller more centered pocket, that you are comparing to a larger wide set pocket, really not a fair comparison. and are that many people not trying on their jeans before buying them that they wouldn’t notice how unflattering they are?? and also these -are “mom jeans” what you showed are just jeans that look terrible on you, not the same thing.

  58. Can you help me find a pair of jeans that fit me?? I like the idea of the Hudson boot or Express rerock!

  59. one of my female friends shared this link on facebook. curious, i clicked on it. hilarious stuff! the things girls talk about… i never realised that the size, spacing, and shape of zip flies and rear pockets made such a difference. no wonder i’m not a fashion designer. it’s funny; last night, one of my buddies was actually talking to me about his idea of buying oversized skinny jeans to find the right fit for himself. the things guys talk about…

  60. My issue is the length. Do any of the ”better” brands you’ve used as examples come in long length? Extra long length? That’s where gap works for me.

    1. What length are we talking about? Almost all of the designer brands come in ridiculously long lengths – and that’s their only length!! The longest I’ve run across are Rock and Republic (35″ inseam I believe) and Brown Label (36″ inch inseam).

      1. I hear ya, Lindsay! I need a 36-37″ inseam, and ON and Gap are the only places I can find them. I can make Express or NY&Co. work, but only in flats. AND I have an added problem of virtually no torso (thanks, scoliosis!) so I have very little waist to speak of. I just can’t imagine going from paying $30 for jeans to paying $200+ for them. Can you give me details on Vault?

This is seriously an incredibly helpful post. It just makes me want to go buy jeans I can’t afford!

        1. Vault buys up overstocks of designer jeans and resells them at home parties or private fittings. A lot of designer jeans come in a 36″ inseam, but I have yet to see any in a 37″.

Let me know what kind of info you’d like on Vault – how to be a rep, have a party, or find a rep near you?

      2. I am in the same boat as Lindsay. 35″ is not an extra long inseam. 36″ is about right. Many of Gap’s tall jeans have 37″ which is perfect especially if you are tall and want the option to wear any shoes other than flats. Big Star XXL work well for length, but many are too low rise, and have too much bling/ embellishment for my taste. What retailers sell Brown Label jeans?

        1. Jeans and pants in general are my biggest problem when shopping for myself! I’m 6’1 and need a 36″ inseam just for being long enough in bare feet. I’m also pear shaped with my hips being 20″ wider than my waist. I found some Cruel girl jeans about 6 years ago in a western wear store and came in a 37″ inseam that were flattering – sadly they have also changed the cut of their jeans. I so want to find a cute pair of long enough jeans- that aren’t way out of this world expensive.

          1. 36″ inseams are the tallest I’ve seen – they typically are in Rock and Republic or Brown Label. I’m keeping an eye out for longer, because I have several people who need them!

  61. I hear you on Gap jeans. I have a pair and I never wear them anymore because they stretch out way too much for my liking. The only thing I buy from those stores anymore are shirts or shoes because those are still pretty cute. I only buy jeans from Express anymore.

  62. Yeah, I don’t buy GAP or ON jeans for my husband and I either anymore…He can really rock their khakis still though.

Thanks for the post…saves us time and money if we know what to look out for in the fitting rooms:)

OH, about the unflattering boyfriend-fit style- I’ve seen it in larger cities. I’m assuming it is just irreverent (people trying to dress with a sense of humor instead to make themselves look best)? Honestly, when I wear skinny jeans, that’s kind of where I’m coming from ;)

  63. For those of us in the plus-size world, Kut makes some good ones. They have some spandex – just enough to make them ever-so-slightly stretchy. I received some JAG jeans a few years ago, and THOSE ARE TREMENDOUS butt jeans! Again, a bit of spandex to make them just stretchy enough. However, both of these brands are at Nordstrom, which means they are quite pricey. And, the stores are not carrying as many JAG cuts. Thanks for the laughs with this article! I’m going to read the original Mom Jeans posting in just a bit!

      1. I’m a Nordstrom shopper and own both Kut and Jag jeans – and they stretch so much that I don’t have to unbutton or unzip to visit the restroom at lunch. I know other people love the stretch, but I’m looking for jeans without stretch. Even 5% seems way too much. So, is it me?

      1. There is one pair that I find ok. They seem to stretch a bit throughout the day. Id be interested in seeing your opinion.

  64. By the way, I have a site that is all about stylish, American-made stuff we love. There are a fair number of choices in American-made denim. But with all products, and ESPECIALLY a woman’s jeans, just because something is made in USA is no reason to buy it. I’d love to hear your perspective on which American-made premium jeans offer the best fit. Email me, maybe? -S

    1. Do you have a link for all of the American-Made denim brands? I saw Bullet Blues on your site, but I was wondering if you had a comprehensive listing. This is shameful, but I really don’t know how to go about researching whether something is truly American-Made or not.

      1. Hi Rachel. I’m the owner of Bullet Blues. Our jeans are made 100 % in USA. Our production is made in California. We use the best denim fabric from Cone NC. Our rivets and buttons are custom made in KY. I was reading the complaints of your followers… Our denim will never stretch too much. I had a problem with that with a lots of brands that I used to wear. Our denim will not shrink either. The fabric is so good that the jeans will follow your body curves. We have, size 24 thru 32 in 2 lengths 32 and 34. We have nothing but good reviews so far. I would be glad to send you a pair for review. Just email me bulletblues2011@aol.com. My site is http://www.bulletbluesca.com. I would gladly offer a great, discount to your followers if they email me about it. I also offer free shopping. Our jeans give an illusion of butt lift, the legs look longer and thinner.. Just go on my site and read the reviews and the news we have been in. I love what you are doing, your advices about, the pockets, etc. do you have a Facebook page? Ours is https://www.facebook.com/bulletbluesjeans. Thank you.

    1. Those weren’t in there the day I went in, so I haven’t had specific experience with them. I’ll keep my eye out for them, though!

  65. yeah, I think the biggest difference is the material. I used to rock old navy and gap jeans – 15 years ago, when they were actual denim and not this stretchy stuff. (I still have a pair with beads and things that one day I wish to wear again). I only own 2 pairs of jeans anymore, and yup- they are old navy, and i’ve really started to hate them. How can you look good in a material that stretches THAT much?

  66. My biggest (hehehe) issue is the gap in the back between my waist and the waist band – besides being a wide 12/14, I’m deep front to back. The waist structure of LandsEnd jeans fit perfectly – the rest of their jean looks, well, you know. They’re the only waist fitting jean I’ve found in years – suggestions?

    1. A LOT of people have the waist-gapping issue for sure. The first thing I ask is how loose are you wearing your jeans on your legs? Jeans are typically made to be fairly fitted (but not uncomfortable) these days, but if people try to wear them looser, the waist also gaps. However, there are a few brands out there that aren’t as gapping, and they’re starting to do a new thing where the waist comes up further in the back than the front. Look for jeans like that, and it should help.

  67. Hi, just saying… I have never had a problem at all with fit with GAP jeans. I am 21 years old and like 5’10”. But I am not a mother, or do I look bad by any means in their jeans. I think it is just body type and fit really because I cant wear half the brands listed, because of the shape.

  68. Yeah… So I require assistance. I only wear 2 pairs of Old Navy jeans, both high-rise flares in 0. I prefer flare jeans in general, but I have this problem with a teeny waist, bigger hips than I apparently should have, no butt, and these freakishly long legs. The ON ones I have are the only jeans I don’t have to wear a belt with. I hate belts.

  69. I would love love love to text or even email you photos of my butt in the jeans that I have…. I think there might even be 1 pair of Gap jeans. But I have no clue what the others are, haha. Even though I’ m a mom of 2, I don’t want to look like I’m wearing mom-jeans… I’m only 25!
Can I have your phone number or email?! Thanks so much!

  70. Just read through this whole thing and loved it, and you’re right the jeans stretch out ridiculously, what fit me in the morning is usually falling off me by lunch. Thanks for this, I know what to look for now when looking at jeans!

  71. Okay so here’s a question. What do you do when your biggest (worst) area is your stomach because let me tell you, after five kids I DO need a zipper that long. Otherwise I have not even fat, but extra skin that spills over my jeans. If I buy them big enough to NOT spill over the top, they are MUCH MUCH to large in my butt and hips and thighs. There is no way I can wear a low rise jean. Muffin top is much worse then sad butt. LOL

    1. I agree – I always look for a mid-rise. Not a Mom Jean, not a Teen Jean. And also a very stretchy waistband so that it doesn’t cut into my post-baby pudge!

  72. I have sold jeans for many years now, at many different companies (none of which were Gap or Old Navy).

You know pretty much nothing about fitting jeans.

Please stop spreading misinformation about ‘Mom Jeans’.

    Thanks

  73. Oh. My. Word. I’m wearing mom jeans. Right. Now! :-( SMH. Thank you, for this. Might just wear yoga pants to go shop for new jeans. Though, not sure which is worse…

  74. I typically wear only ON Flirt Flare jeans which they no longer sell and I am starting to realize now that I am trying to wear nicer/more stylish tops that they look awful after about 30 minutes of wearing them. I also have a pair of Levi 515 bootcuts that I fear aren’t much better. I would love to email/text you my pics and get some suggestions from you. I hate shopping for jeans, I can never seem to find any that I think look good.

  75. Thanks for that! I don’t wear either ON or Gap Jeans (I swear the crotch hangs 3 inches below mine, regardless of the size)… But seeing these pics was just the proof I needed on why I never should.
I am in the market for some distressed jeans, living in a small town, but only close option is Maurices. I am NOT a fan of their jeans at all. What are your thoughts on the other brands they carry (Silver, Vigoss, Hydraulic)?
Also, I have been shopping online and always come to the size dilenma, I typically wear a 6 or a 27/28, but not all sizes are the same. Where do you reccomend for online jean shopping?

    1. Agreed – online shopping is just difficult. Because all jeans fit everyone differently, I’m definitely a “try it before you buy it” type – unless you don’t have an option, and in that case, make sure that they have a good return policy!!

I don’t have any of the other brands at Maurices, but I know a lot of people that look great in them and are very happy with them – especially Silver.

      Hope that helps!!

  76. Ok. Good points made. My problem with the “after” jeans is that they look too Ed Hardy/pocket embellished. I just can’t do it. Are there some simple, great fitting jeans out there?

    1. Definitely Seven for all Mankind and Citizens of Humanity. They have some very conservative-styled, great fitting jeans. I totally understand – most of the time I go with the straight-laced ones, too – every now and then I venture out into more detailed ones.

  77. Wow!! I had no idea that the right jeans made such a difference! I will for sure be taking your advice on getting my denim elsewhere! You’re very good at being able to find more flattering cuts for anybody. Thanks!!

  78. Loved your post (found via Pinterest) but I have to admit: Gap Jeans make *my* butt look the best (second best is Joe’s Jeans Honey fit). I have about 5 pair of Gap jeans (skinny, boyfriend and three pair of bootcut) and I LOVE them all! I think it all depends on your body type. I am 5’5″, a size 4/6 with a thicker waist, flat stomach, narrow hips, round booty and fuller thighs.

PS – Old Navy have NEVER worked for me …

    1. I completely agree that they do work very well on some people – like my friend in the “Long and Lean” section. They fit her better than anything else she’s tried!

So what this means is that Gap needs to hire you and my friend to be models. :)

  79. OMG!! I think I will go buy some different jeans today!
I have been a devoted Old Navy Jeans fan forever and always wondered why everyone said my butt looked like it was falling off! lol
Glad you dedicated your time (and your husbands) to this! Thanks!

  80. Love this article! For ladies looking for more affordable denim, I work at LOFT Outlet (a division of Ann Taylor) and we sell jeans for around $60 full-price, and we usually have sales and coupons going on. I buy ALL my jeans from there, and not just because of my employee discount!! I am super-short (under five feet), and I used to have to get all my jeans hemmed about a foot, but the petite jeans at LOFT fit me beautifully and I don’t have to hem them! We carry three styles: Modern, Original, and Curvy (oh, and sometimes Boyfriend), and from my experience in the dressing room they look good on most butts :) Also, our jeans are very simple–no embellishments.

And no, I’m not being paid to say this lol. I genuinely love these jeans (the eight pairs in my closet can attest to that!) and have been wearing them long before I started working at LOFT!

  81. I just found this post while browsing pinterest, and I have to make a confession…the only jeans I own are from Old Navy. Help!! I’ve always bought them because I had a hard time finding the right size/style in other brands, but I’ve never loved how they look on me…I guess now I know why!

So, what would you suggest for this stuck-in-Old-Navy girl? Something cute & budget friendly would be preferable. :)

    1. Hm. I’d have to know how they fit you in particular to help, but the least expensive brand that I think looks really nice is Express. They have good sales and coupons, but I promise – spending more for jeans is totally worth it. Once you find a pair that fits, flatters, and lasts, you won’t mind paying a bit more!

  82. Such a difference! I can see that I’m wearing the wrong jeans! I have always been a huge fan of Lucky jeans, mainly because my rear end is so HUGE, and they seem to work best. I have a huge rear, wide hips and small waist. Jeans are so hard to find that are flattering. I have the problem of them gapping open in the back and still being tight on my rear. I’ll have to try some of these, I am not ready to look like the mom I am! Any suggestions for such a HUGE problem?

    1. A good pair of Lucky Brand can be really nice – do they fit in the waist? Or are you afraid they don’t look good on you?

I would try for jeans with more stretch in them in general, like the LA Idol brand shown. They typically come back in at the waist well.

  83. I desperately need some advice, please! :-) I wear a somewhere between a size 10-14 petite in jeans (short rise and legs). But although I have a very thick waist, (front to back), I’m not very wide. I also have a flat butt. All the jeans I’ve tried in my size have pockets that are really far apart, and seem to be made for a wider tush, or at least one that can fill it out more. Are there any jeans with pockets closer together, even in the higher sizes?

    Thank you so much!

PS. How much spandex is too much? My jeans always seem to fall off me after a couple of hours, but naturally when I buy them too small, they never stretch out enough. :-)

    1. Hmm… try Express (Stella cut), or LA Idol jeans. You want a good amount of stretch without so much spandex that they cling too much to your body. The perfect jeans should actually NOT stretch out at all (and stay stretched out), but have plenty of give to move around in.

      Hope that helps!

  84. No mention of some of my fave jeans, American Eagle, Vigoss & once in a while I get lucky at Aeropostale……

  85. ohmahgerd I’m so embarassed XD

I’m forced to wear Old Navy because it’s the only store with plus size clothes (20 and XXL) not under a big sign screaming “Fatties Over Here.” (that’s how it feels, anyway)

Hopefully I’ll be able to fit into flattering jeans sooner rather than later. (I still have an old pair of American Eagle 14 that looked effing amazing)

    1. I feel your pain. I hope to do a follow-up for plus-sized jeans soon, but you’re right – they’re just hard to find! Keep an eye out for a sequel.

  86. GREAT, FANTASTIC article full of truth! Really loved how you proved your point in pictures! It was amazing! I will forward this link to all my girlfriends!
    Thanks!

  87. I apologize if you’ve answered this in the comments somewhere above, but I haven’t read all of them….I was wondering what your take on Levi’s is.
    Julie

    1. I haven’t seen a ton I like – mainly because their pockets tend to point outward and create elbow butt. However, I think there probably are some out there that look good on the right person.

  88. would love to see you give http://www.indicustom.com a try. My son is very short… 5’3″ with a 24 inch inseam… finding him jeans that truly fit is an impossible task – but then we found indicustom. Pricey? Yes. Worth every penny? Absolutely.

FYI – I don’t work for indi in anyway. I am just so impressed and I want to share the secret of great jeans with the world.

    1. I have a pair of Indi jeans also. LOVE that they literally tailor every aspect of the jean to your liking! You choose the stitching color, pocket detail, zipper or button fly, amount of spandex, wash. EVERYTHING! And you get to send them back and have them take in or let out anything that doesn’t work for you including hem, rise, waist, thighs, knees, etc. I am quite curvy and they are the only jeans that don’t have a massive waist gap, which is actually one of the questions they ask to estimate your fit (do your jeans gap at the waist- not at all – a little – a lot?) They’ll run about the same as most designer jeans price-wise, but every once in a while they offer a 30% off sale. I got mine with a Living Social voucher that made them much more affordable.

  89. OH MY GOODNESS. YES! I have been thinking this to myself for years but always thought “it must just be my body”. I always left Old Navy feeling just gross. Now I know IT’S NOT ME. Thank you for posting this :). You’ve helped me regain confidence in my fashion thoughts AND introduced me to some new names in jeans that I must check out!

  90. Old Navy jeans are the ONLY jeans that I have found that actually fit me. But of course they have no detail or style to them. I need a jean the is smaller in the waist and bigger in the thighs. I find myself having to buy a size up because most jeans don’t get past my thighs. Do you have any ideas on what brand of jeans might work better for me?

    1. Have you tried Maurices? I also need a smaller waist and bigger thigh. I think I’ve had the most success with their “Taylor” fit in the past, but I haven’t tried them in a while. Just a thought! I’ll be watching to see if anyone else has a solution.

  91. THANK YOU!
The winter of 2011 I tried on every jean known to man except for J Brand, because I was afraid of loving them. In the end I bought a pair of trouser cut jeans from Banana Republic because I hated jean pockets. I know know it wasn’t just me.
I had no idea that the Express Jeans were so well fitting. (Being of a certain age I haven’t shopped there in years, but will certainly go there for my next jean purchase).
    Great job!

  92. Wow!! Sadly I live in OLd Navy jeans. They ship to my overseas military mail box for free and I guess i’ve gotten complacent. I know they look terrible on me, but I feel at a loss for good, reasonable options on the British economy. I always buy Old Navy’s dreamer jeans, although they are more like a nightmare. Within 30 minutes of putting on a fresh pair, they are saggy off my butt, the belly pooches in all of the looseness. I wear jeans every day for my job in security. Jeans and a hoodie and work boots. It’s not glamourous but merely a short term job until we move stateside in two years. I always figure, why bother? I’m just monitoring construction workers, electricians, etc all day, i’m not trying to pick anyone up. The problem is, I wear these terrible Old Navy jeans on weekend and in my downtime. So my poor husband has to look at my saggy butt as if I have a sand soaked diaper inside of it. UGH! Your post has really woken me up. I need a change.

  93. You are a jean goddess! I speak for many women when I say “thank you SO much” for posting this information! YOU ROCK!

  94. Love this post! Fabulous info on what to look for! I have recently become a “good jean” snob because I realized I’d rather only have two pairs of great jeans that I love to wear than 10 pairs of so-so jeans.

  95. Thank you, that was hilarious. Love your work. You’ve inspired me to go jeans shopping ASAP. (I live in Australia so will have to hunt out some different brands available here, but at least now I know what to look out for! You’re a genius!)

  96. This is classic! I’m so glad you blogged this. My husband even read it cause I struggle with some Of these issues. Good stuff! May I text you a pic of my butt?! Haha! ( no, seriously)…

  97. This is AMAZING! Love the contrasts. I have Old Navy jeans in my closet and I only wear them when I know I’m not going to leave the house and I need to do laundry. But I’m getting rid of them today! Thanks for showing such great alternatives!

  98. Finally—someone who agrees and thinks about this type of stuff that i do! I must say, Old Navy jeans are a curse for the butt. Nada thing flattering about the jeans selection at that store. I was beginning to feel that i fell into the weird area of too small w a booty too large–anyways..
Just wanted to say what a giggle I had reading this blog..while at work, none the less.
Theres nothing more depressing to me than trying on jeans while Im not having a “skinny day”.

  99. WHOA!!!! I don’t know whether I want to scream in frustration or joy or both! Probably both! I am definitely a Gap/Old Navy offender. After 4 kiddos, I have as much excitement for jean shopping as I do bathing suits. Though, I may have come to that conclusion after the first two babes. The advice and visual comparisons you have given are a treasure and have succeeded in renewing a spark of interest in finding a great, flattering pair of jeans. I see a near future where gone are the days of uni-butt, triple-butt, my-mother’s-butt, continually hitching them back up, wearing them for a couple hours only to change into sweats, or just plain wanting to throw them away! Who am I kidding, I don’t throw them away. I love jeans and wear them nearly every day. I throw them across the room and revisit the torture another time. Thank you!

  100. Found this on Pinterest. Hilarious, but very informative! My go-to jeans right now are skinny jeans from PacSun. They stretch out after one day of wearing though, bleh. I’m always on the eternal search for just a simple straight-legged jean. Not skinny, not bootcut, not flare…just straight…is that too much to ask?? About 6 years ago, my absolutely favorite pair of jeans was from Old Navy. They were perfect, but fell apart because I wore them so much. I went back to Old Navy, bought the EXACT same size and EXACT same style and they were completely different and fit horribly. They must have drastically changed the way they make their styles. I never buy jeans there anymore.

  101. What about curvy girl jeans? I am mature but dont want to wear Mom jeans but not trying to look 20 either. I thought Old Navy was a good choice but I guess not! I wear a 16/18, the issue is most 16 are too tight in the waist and most 18 are too big in the waist. And yes they fit ok out of the dryer then an hour later they are falling off. Any suggestions for curvy women?

    1. I would try Maurices if there’s one near you. I plan on doing a plus-sized sequel, but it is infuriating how few options there are out there. Keep an eye out for the sequel and I’ll see what I can find!

  102. I never really gave much thought to the direct view of the butt in jeans, since in the mirror you can’t see that yourself! I am an Old Navy jeans wearer myself due to the cost (about $20) mostly, but now I need to find someone to take a picture of my rear for me and I am scared!

I do have a question though. I am a size 12 right now (since my weight loss has started I have lost 40 pounds and still going!), and a friend suggested Trouser jeans for me because of my shape. I have two pairs that I like (from the front mind you) but I am curious as to how the difference in the leg width might change the outcome. The jeans are basically wide-legged, and are only fitted in the hips. If I get someone to take a picture maybe I will have to send it to you so that you can help me out!

    1. Congrats on the weight loss!!

I like the look of trouser jeans, IF the front pockets are either very tight to the hip or are straight across instead of diagonal. When the pockets are diagonal, they tend to pucker out and do no favors for your hips. Also, they don’t need to dwarf your legs too badly. Feel free to email me a pic!

  103. I HATE jean shopping because my butt never looks good! Where do you get inexpensive jeans that actually fit well?!?!

    1. The cheapest well-fitting jeans I’ve found so far are Express – you can get them on sale and they’re not too bad. Also try American Eagle, but it’s hard to say without fitting someone what will work on them.

      Hope that helps!

  104. I love all these jeans. I do GAP jeans because they’re the only place I can find my size, a 30×36! I wish I could find cooler jeans than my Long and Leans, but with lots of little ones to clothe and feed, that’s never going to happen. :( This was a fun read, though! Thanks for posting.

  105. I have sold jeans for years at County Seat (when it was still around) and The Buckle. There is a perfect fit out there for everyone. I have a few pairs of Express jeans and they can be just as bad as GAP or Old Navy. My best suggestion…try on, try on some more, and try on a few more. Once you find that fit and make that are right for you then go for it. Spend extra. You don’t need 8 pairs of jeans, you need 3 really great pair that fit you perfectly. Every single body is different so what fits you may not fit the next woman. My pick for myself are Liv’s by Big Star. I love them and at $160 a pop I have 3 pair that I alternate.

  106. WHAT!? I feel like I’ve been lied to for years! I have a curvy butt, and I’ve always been told to stay away from pockets that have too much stitching, stick to big, plain pockets because they’re slimming. Clearly you’ve disproved that theory because the gap and old navy jeans have big, plain pockets and they make everyone in the photos look significantly wider! I am in my 30s, I have 4 kids, but I certainly don’t want to LOOK like a mom! Thank you so much for ripping off the bandaid, I feel like a new woman already :-)

  107. Wow. This was exactly what I need! My butt looks like so many of your befores and I figured that was just my butt…I had no idea that my jeans were to blame!! Here’s the thing, I haven’t shopped for myself in years. I’ve recently dropped over 40 lbs (since Jan!!) and it’s high time I bought clothes that fit. It’s been so long since I’ve gone to a clothes store that wasn’t Target that I have NO IDEA what stores these brands can be found in besides the Express ones. I have never heard of these! Could you please point me in the right direction?

    1. Congrats on the weight loss! Buying new jeans will make you look like you lost 10 more pounds at least.

LA Idol can be found at boutiques, and many of the others in department stores. A lot of them are also available through Vault Denim.

  108. Sad… Not gonna lie… I’m almost a little hurt… As a die-hard GAP lover, I’ll try to not take this personally : ) But someone’s gotta stick up for them, so I’m here to the rescue! : ) I admire the dedication to trying to do a fair comparison and yes the pictures are telling and compelling. All I can say though, is different stores cater to different body types and styles. For example, I am a somewhat curvy girl; if I tried to wear Mudd Jeans… there is NO way those would ever look good on me, but other girls, yes! Beautiful. Anyway, it is interesting as long and lean and the perfect boot cuts are the two I usually wear (trousers for professional pants) – I also kind of like that they loosen with wear. So yes, I’ll concede, GAP pants aren’t for everyone and many have told me that (I’m always in disbelief : ). But as you’ll also notice, the majority of the other pants you tried on have lots of detail and swirls on the pockets, etc. which even if they fit, are too flashy/trendy for people like me, so it might fit my body, but not the message of who I am or the timeless look that lasts. Anyway… I just had to say I STILL love GAP – their sales, simplicity, classic styles, happy colors, upbeat music, friendly staff, customer service, etc. etc. (not to mention great tops, perfumes, jackets, etc…) even if not everyone loves the jeans : ). On that note… I’ll have to swing by Express to try on the rerocks ; ) Thanks for doing the homework, this was very interesting!

  109. Hi! I came across your site on Pinterest and have now read several of your ‘jeans’ articles. Love them. I went to the Vault website, but need a little help. I am a plus size gal and am wondering if you can steer me in the right direction. I noticed there are several capri styles in the plus size, but can’t seem to find the full length jeans. Help!
    Brianne

    1. The Kiosk inventory changes often. They have one style of plus sized jeans that I really like – the X Denim TD1004’s. Keep an eye out for them! Or if you like how they look in the non-plus sized ones, I could sell you a pair directly and ship them, but I’m more of a fan of people trying on jeans before buying them.

      hope that helps!

  110. What a great blog! This is exactly why Vault Denim
Consultants are having so much fun! We can transform a woman’s look just by putting her in a great pair of jeans…for usually half the retail price! We have consultants across the country who can help everyone out!

  111. I know it’s weird but I *might* need to butt text you. I’ve recently lost 80 pounds and “normal” sizes fit me now. Of course, the first place I head is Old Navy and find something that does the job and assume it’s just me that has a weird body shape. Now I know I am not alone! :) Also, I realized that I could probably fit into Rock & Republic jeans now instead of just admiring them from afar (and they’re on sale at Kohl’s right now…and I have a Kohl’s card!)

  112. I need new jeans!!! All my old ones are stretched out and I spent last winter in maternity jeans and all summer in skirts. I need a new pair of jeans for the fall and hate jean shopping! I have a teeny waist and big butt. I hate having my buttcrack pop out every time I sit down and hate the tight unbreathable feel. I’m pretty slim, wearing a size 4-6 but all my weight is in my butt. What’s your brand recommendation? Help!

    1. Hm… it’s hard to say without doing an actual fitting, but definitely look for a medium rise. Also, a lot of brands are starting to make jeans curve UP in the back to cover crack. Hold the jeans up and if the back is higher than the front, then they might be the right jeans for you!

  113. My biggest struggle is two-fold–first, I have a 36 inch inseam, and it seems like Old Navy and Gap are my go-to places for jeans because they’re the only ones who seem to carry such a long inseam for under $50.

Second? I live in podunk USA, so even if I wanted to go try on a pair of designer jeans to try and convince myself to buy them? I couldn’t. We really only have one store even at the nearby mall that sells designer denim, and certainly not in the freakishly tall inseam I need. Sigh.

  114. This is so hilarious! Yet scary! I haven’t been able to explain why some jeans just don’t do it for me…you totally nailed the reasons though (pockets! too big in the butt!) I did buy some from ON though that seem to fit. However, I am possibly one of the exceptions. I also admit I bought them b/c they are CHEAP! I have found that Aero is the best place to get pants to fit my body type. Do you accept butt shots to critique? I don’t want to look too mom-ish, even though I am a mom of two little guys. And I loved the baby leg pictures, they made me laugh the hardest.

  115. Maybe they are just made for a different body type than yours. I get all of my jeans from Old Navy and they are extremely flattering to my body. Granted, there are a few styles of Old Navy jeans that are just disastrous to my butt as well. I don’t ever get jeans from Gap though.

  116. I need serious jean help. I’m so obsessed with controlling my muffin top that the thought of what my backside looks like never even occurred to me! What’s good jean to control the out of control muffin-top AND make my hiney look delectable? For the record, I *am* a mom, but I don’t wanna look like one.

    1. Look for jeans with spandexy, wide waistbands. We have a few through Vault Denim that are great for not cutting into the muffin top – my faves are Emerson Edwards and Alter Ego.

  117. Interesting and informative read! I wear ON jeans for a couple of reasons: a) they are cheap and b) they come in my size! Do you have any suggestions for us plus-sized ladies looking for a decent pair of jeans?

    1. They’re hard to find! I hope to do a sequel post (keep your eyes out) but it’s going to take some major research. In them meantime, try Maurices.

  118. I may need your number to “butt-text” ya! I have a very round butt (thanks Dad for the genes for big butt) and I can NEVER, and I mean NEVER, find a pair of jeans that look good!!!

  119. Thanks so much for taking the time to educate all of us in Jeans 101. I just signed up on your Vault site.. I think alot more Mommies in my neighborhood could really benefit from a party!! :D

  120. I love this! Definitely eye opening. Question; I have a small bum and was wondering if you can suggest a good brand for me to try. I’m a size 10 and thicker through the middle than the legs. Any brand you suggest for under $100?

    1. Rock and Republics and William Rast are great for smaller butts and bigger legs, but they’re not under $100, unless you get them through a Vault Denim rep. Perhaps try American Eagle? I’m not positive – it’s hard to say without doing a fitting!

        1. Yes. I have recently been researching this change in marketing by R&R. I have not been to Kohls to check out the quality of this line, though.

  121. It’s the pockets on the butt that make most of these jeans look so bad. Someone else has probably posted this already. Anyway, those ‘other’ jeans look great on you!

  122. I found this via Pinterest and OMG I think I am wearing mom jeans. I had my first child last year and since then, nothing really fits correctly. I detest ON jeans but I have a pair of Gap Curvy fit that I “thought” looked good. I also have a pair from Maurices, but uh, they are huge on me. Help me!!! I am desperate and tired of atrocious jeans! The problem – I am a size 16 so my choices are limited. I have a flat butt and am “apple” shaped. Since having a baby, I have a muffin top without jeans on (and I can’t believe I just admitted that). Do you have any recommendations to help me?

    1. Oh sweetheart, welcome to my world! You just described me to a “T”. I think I’ve nearly given up on ever finding the right pair of jeans for me. Even the ladies in the store are like “….Are you sure you’re human? Nothing looks right.” You have my best of luck to you in finding something that flatters you. <3

    2. Look for jeans with spandexy, wide waistbands. We have a few through Vault Denim that are great for not cutting into the muffin top – my faves are Emerson Edwards and Alter Ego.

  123. I so admire you for all your butt pics! I think I would die, especially putting it out there for the world to see! However, I think I need my photographer to go with. E next time I go shopping.

  124. I am 4’11”. Size 8 (usually )with considerable junk in the trunk. Any suggestions ? Oh, I’m 43 so I prefer an unbedazzled pocket!

  125. I love this post. Jeans are the hardest things to shop for. I know I’ve worn a Mom jean and would really appreciate being able to ‘butt text’ you.

  126. Have I not seen this?!?! Looks like someone needs a trip to Express Rock to find jeans… thanks for the heads up!

And I pretty much died laughing at the “butt text”. Yes.

  127. I have to say, this is a very interesting post. Reason being, I have long loathed both The Gap’s and Old Navy’s jeans. I wasn’t sure who they are made to fit. (I am 5’2” ~103lbs and basically the “ruler” shape, although the right jeans give me a decent butt.) I thought they were made to fit the curvier body styles, but now I know they are unflattering on those as well. I’m not sure my observations are fair given that The Gap actually didn’t MAKE jeans small enough for me until about a year ago. (Old Navy still doesn’t except in the little girl’s section where they sort of fit but the legs are too short, the pockets too small, and they’re often covered in juvenile decoration.) My main problem with Gap is not only the shape of their jeans, but their bizarre sizing. Where in other stores I wear a 0 or even a 1, at the Gap I’m now a 00. Before they sold that size I was just a size angry. I have one pair of jeans from there that actually fit (High Rise Really Skinny, which I don’t think they still have) and they don’t stretch out because they seem to have lycra in them. Anyway, I guess my point is to express my frustration that Express (no pun intended) and most of the above jean brands only sell jeans for much larger people than me. Which make me feel like an alien trying on another species’ clothing. I’m not really sure what someone my size is supposed to do other than try to find juniors jeans that fit. I don’t have the hips to fill out these types of jeans. (I’m 25, and trying to find “adult” jeans has become insanely irritating.)

    1. I have SO MANY jeans at my house that would fit you well through Vault. We have some tiny sizes – down to 23. Too bad you’re probably nowhere near me!

But if you’re willing to pay it (or can find them on clearance), designer brands certainly make smaller jeans than Gap, ON, and Express.

  128. Totally agree with your post! But what are Your thoughts on old navy’s new rock star super skinny jean? They are different and my fav YouTube guru dulcecandy87 featured It? What do you think?

    1. I haven’t seen those yet, and I’m pretty sure that Old Navy has a restraining order against me, so I probably won’t be seeing them. :)

  129. Having grown up in the 70’s/80’s… I thought I had seen it all when it came to jeans! Oh my, I have never really taken the time to truely examine my rear in jeans. Fitting room mirrors and lighting, no matter where you shop, are all HORRIBLE… I have always loved my Levi’s, but I think I need to get a much closer look, as my body has changed dramatically over the years. (my darling children and my many excuses for not exercising…)
Thank you to the person who pinned this blog of yours, to Pintrest! Rachel, I think you may have saved my jeans-wearing-life!! :)

  130. I love your idea and research but I am confused.
I have a larger bottom and all around body for that fact. I currently am working on a muffin top (YUCK)
I am a 12 short and there is nothing missing from my backside. Here is my confusion… I always thought having a larger rear meant staying away from Jeans with buttons or bling or design. But each of your design bling type pockets look trimmer than the ones without.

I can tell from the romper pic I am larger pretty much everywhere. I am interested in knowing how the effect can be different for a larger bum.

    1. It depends on the type and placement. I know this isn’t helpful, but it can minimize or maximize depending on how it’s done. The key is to analyze really well – and take photos if you need to!

  131. jean queen!!! I am living in South Korea and can’t find anything for me. I have to buy jeans over the internet without trying them on.
I am 5 feet tall 120 lbs. Bigger rear and thighs..Athletic build.
How do I know what jeans are good for me?
I have one pair I like, they are from Lucky. I have no idea their style and ugh, I need a new pair of pants!

    1. I wish I knew a perfect answer, but trying on is SO key!! I think that LA Idol would look nice on you, but I don’t know that’s something you could buy on the internet.

  132. Hi! I found this post via Pinterest and I’m so glad I did! I’ve always sworn by Gap Long and Lean in a dark wash but you’ve made me rethink my whole world!! I had no idea the difference a good fit makes. Well, I had a little bit of an idea….but now I KNOW. I can’t wait to go though my closet and take pictures of my butt!

Also, I have been reading some of your other posts and I have to tell you that you are really funny! Tears-streaming-down-my-face-cuz-I’m-laughing-so-hard-funny!! I’m hooked on your blog!

  133. My retinas survived!! Thank you for the giggles and the information. My favorite jeans are Lucky brand :)

  134. Hi Rachel,

I wanted to ask you. Are the 7 FAM, Hudson Rock and La Idol all available at Express?
    Thanks for the great blog!!

    1. No, the only ones available at Express are the ReRocks. The rest are available at boutiques or department stores, or through Vault Denim.

  135. THANK U!!! I’ve been saying it for yrs that better jeans look better on ur butt!!! My friends think I’m crazy but I’ve said it for years and I’m so glad someone posted something bout it!!

    1. I hope to do a sequel after doing some research – not sure yet. Unfortunately, the jeans makers haven’t realized what a fabulous opportunity they’re missing to make great plus-sized jeans! Keep an eye out for a sequel!

  136. !!!!! I am now terrified to take a picture and truly see what I look like in my jeans but it seems that it must be done and then off to shop!

  137. Well, I’ve never bought jeans from Gap or Old Navy, because I’ve never found ones that were right for me. That said, I can hardly find any that work for me. I did try the Gap Real Skinny a few days ago and I liked the fit in the hips and butt actually, which is a rare treat, but the only wash they offered it in was ugly, and if they stretch out as much as you indicate that would have been a $70 disaster.

I haven’t found a retailer that carries 7FAM, which I really want to try, and Express jeans are always way too long (I’m only 5’2″) and the few I’ve found in a shorter length fit my butt/thighs well, but the waistbands are so wide I can pull them on without unzipping them. Since I’m a size 2/4, I am often forced to shop in junior’s section, which I hate, but I have come away with a few pairs from Delia’s, because while they aren’t quite my ideal fit, they make up for it in being cheap. Sad compromise for me.

  138. Yeah, I don’t buy jeans that have embellished pockets. My ass is great enough as-is, I don’t need sparkles and stitching to draw attention to it. Also, a lot of jeans styles shown are completely unflattering on the models shown… even in the expensive jeans! And finally, what about looser cuts? I still love trouser cut jeans. As a professional woman, those are what looks best.

    1. I’m with you on not liking the “bling” on the pockets. I also have preference for looser fitting jeans (I’m stuck in the 90’s, I admit it), but then again I despite it when my pants hug everything from my kneecaps to my muffintop. >_< Also, not unlike some other ladies – I cannot afford 7FAM. I spend top dollar on shoes for my kids, but clothes are either Old Navy (before they went with 80's neon crap), or the thrift store. :P

  139. That was hilarious! Thanks for documenting what many have felt, but never shared! Gap owns Old Navy – so that’s probably the reason for the over production of ass-disappointing Mom jeans. Plus they have adjusted their sizing to make women feel better about themselves by fitting into smaller sizes- regardless, even in a Zero my butt has never been so depressed in jeans.

  140. I noticed alot of comments searching for plus size clothing. Torrid is a good place for plus size clothes (younger style than Lane Bryant)

  141. Do Express jeans generally fit true to size? I usually wear a 6 long, in curvy (if I can find them). I can’t bring myself to spend $100 on a pair of jeans, but I found some on eBay that priced well. But…the nearest Express store is an hour away, and I don’t have time to drive there to try on jeans. What do you think?

    1. Express sizes large like Gap and Old Navy. So I would say you’ll wear a size or two smaller at Express than normal, or the same size as you wear at Gap or Old Navy.

  142. I loved this article! I am forever trying to find jeans that fit properly. I actually tried on a pair at a thrift store a few weeks ago that fit PERFECTLY! but were then snagged out of my cart when I wasn’t paying attention. The back label said “TIMELINE” in white letters on a black label. I have been searching the web like crazy for them but haven’t had any luck so far, do you have any idea who would sell this brand? or of brands that have a “timeline” style?

  143. Oh…..I totally wear ON jeans. Now I wonder if I’m wearing *shudder* Mom jeans!

My difficulty is that I’m a big girl, as in I wear a 14/16, and I’m really curvy, so it’s super hard to find cute jeans that fit well, are durable, and won’t cost an arm and a leg. Any recommendations? Also, can I butt-text you?

  144. You are simply brillant and possibly have saved my life. Now I just have to find them in “I ate a super model size”.

    1. I just looked online at Lane Bryant and Torrid….I’m mildly horrified. They are pictured too short with WRONG pockets. What’s a Plus Size to do?

Still following your hallowed words I looked online at Macy’s. Designer being the key here. As soon as I can dump the kids with the husband and grab a girlfriend to take butt pics, I’m going to the mall to get some proper jeans. Pray for me.

      1. I hope to do a plus sized sequel soon. I’ve heard good things about Torrid, but we JUST got one here in town. I’ll check them out soon! Maurices typically has some nice options, though.

  145. Thank you so much!!!!
Ok I have been small my whole life, and I remember when Old Navy and Gap got popular back when I was in High School(Looong time ago) So I went and tried some on thought WTF? Everything fit short and wide. I talked to my sister asking if they work for her. (she is built different) And NO they don’t work for her.

So I always wondered who fits in these, they are awful! But the brands remained so popular I always figured they fit someone. Now I see they don’t look good on any one!

Thank you for this it will help a lot of women. I am sending this to all my friends. You have done a public service with this post. Your offering help to all women, now we can all look better, thinner, younger and feel more confident.

GOOD JOB! and thank you again
    Kasey from http://mylifeonthedivide.blogspot.com/

  146. Oh my goodness, this is such an eye opener for me! I have the hardest time finding jeans that fit me, that I never even thought to look at how well they looked in the butt area. I can’t afford to spend a lot on jeans, so I’ve been wearing Walmart ones, and recently bought a pair from Target. My problem is that I have the larger thighs and flat (but wide) butt, and small waist. I must have a long rise too because I get the panty peek anytime I bend over or move at all. I have a long torso too, so long shirts don’t seem to help either. They ride up and the jeans are low and I feel like a plumber. Now I’m scared to look at the 2 pairs of jeans I own that actually fit me to see if they are mom jeans! I’ve never found a pair of jeans that I feel I look amazing in, so I bet they totally are mom jeans. It’s crazy to see how big of a difference the pocket placement makes.

  147. I found this from pinterest and haven’t read any of your other posts so forgive me if you’ve already said something about this before, but my only two questions are: #1 How long should my jeans last (1 year? 3 years??)? And #2 Where can I find good coupons for these amazing jeans? I seem to have the worst luck when it comes to bargain hunting! I want to send you a butt text, but I need to save up some money before I can ask you to help me fix my problem lol

    1. 1. It depends on how often you wear them. If you have a couple of pairs that you wear nearly daily, I’d say a year or two. If you have more pairs, 3-4 years. But anything beyond that and you’ll probably want a newer style anyway.

      2. I don’t know about coupons, because they’re usually excluded on department store coupons. But sometimes you can find great deals on clearance!

  148. Oh…My…God! Thank you so much! I’ve seen the light! And to think, I’ve just been wearing these god-awful Old Navy bermudas like it was no big deal. Just took a peek, and the view from the back is horrifying. I just hope they make 7FAM or something similar in a curvy girl size. :)

    1. I think you need to one of these posts for men. Every dad I see around here is a victim of “Dirty diaper” butt. Not sure what that’s all about.

  149. Great post! Totally agree, as I own pairs of both Gap and ON jeans. Mind if i ask though what are your thoughts on American Eagle jeans?

  150. I thought I was the only one with this problem, though I will admit that in my case and with my body type it seems to happen in more stores than just old navy (I just tend to shop there a lot because I have their credit card and use it as an excuse to buy stuff I don’t need. My biggest problem right now is finding ANY jeans ANYWHERE, that fit my body. I’m a lil chubby and have a bit of a belly (in the process of loosing it), but my legs are super skinny (hey, I gotta have something goin for me) and I have no butt. So I will go into a store and have to get a size 14 or 16 to fit comfortably around my waist but they will be soooo long and baggy and hanging off my butt! And if I get them any smaller to hug what little curves I have they are so tight around the waist I can hardly breathe. Why don’t they make jeans like men’s sizes, where you have a waist and length measurement? Does anyone know of a store that does that for a relatively cheap price?

    1. If you ever run into William Rast jeans, try them – I think they might work well with your proportions. But they are expensive, so hopefully you’ll run into them on clearance!

  151. Love this! I’ve always had problems shopping for jeans…I’ve got a bit of a belly but a flat butt and slim thighs and calves. I wind up sizing for the belly (usually between a 9-12) and just living with the butt and knee sag. Even then, the jeans often slide down (if I don’t let it cut into my sides) or cut into my sides (so it doesn’t slide down). I’d LOVE, LOVE, LOVE any suggestions for brands. I’m willing to spend between 50-125 on a pair of jeans.

  152. Oh my gosh I freakin’ love this post!!! I just saw it on pinterest and it’s amazing. I just had a baby and my ultimate fear is MOMMY STYLE. lol

thankfully old navy jeans NEVER fit me right so I never bought them… but I will admit to liking a few Gap jeans… hmmm I’ll have to rethink them…

My ultimate favorite jeans that do thin me is MEK! I love the rerock photos – I’ll have to check those out. THANK YOU!!

  153. I have been reading your page, but didn’t see any ideas for those of us who are smaller. I am a mother of 2 and cannot seem to keep weight. I am normally in a size 1. Any suggestions for smaller sizes?

    1. There are some great designer jeans that come in tiny sizes. I wish you could come to my house – I have dozens here that hardly anyone is ever small enough to try on!!

      Try:
      J Brand
      Emerson Edwards (exclusive through Vault)
      James Jeans

But you’re right – smaller sizes are really hard to find at mainstream stores like Gap, Old Navy, and Express. I wear a 2 at these stores, and I am not tiny. So anyone who normally wears a 1 would have nothing to even try on there.

  154. So what do you buy if you can’t afford 7’s? I will never buy gap jeans again and I’m sure every pair I have from the loft goes in the same category

    1. I have found 7’s at Marshall’s believe it or not, now mind you once I read this I believe they are all wrong for me however they have been found at that store for $24.99. Just a head’s up

  155. This was so fun to read- I too wear Old Navy because they’re so cheap… one income makes it a little tight you know? but maybe I can save up… is it wrong if you can only afford one pair but wear them all the time? hahaha

  156. Rachel – Let’s talk! I have been a GAP Long and Lean wearer for years! I didn’t know! AUGH! And I am a mom. I was recently accused of having mom hair, now mom jeans. I can’t go out of the house any more. Where do you live? Because I live in Idaho, and I clearly need some Vault denim in my life immediately.

  157. Okay, what I think I used to look for in a jean was all wrong… I normally wear trouser cut jeans because I have a long waist and now I am terrified that I am giving myself three butt cheeks. I AM AFRAID TO LOOK; however I must. I will be on a jean mission next chance I get. Thank you for the blog

  158. Do you consider Banana Republic in that category, too? Afterall, BR is the same as Gap and ON. I find that BR does fit nicer than the other 2, but your demo has made me doubt whether anything I own actually “works” the way I think it does.

  159. Hi!
I am a bodacious size 14. What brand would you recommend I use. Most brands run sizes that are too small, therefore, gap is where I usually end up

    1. LA Idol goes up to 15, and Maurices has great stuff. I’ve just recently heard of Torrid and will be checking it out soon. I hope to do a plus sized sequel soon – keep an eye out for it!

  160. Wow! Thank you for this super-informative post. I wish I could wear jeans in more popular, well-fitting brands like the ones featured here. Unfortunately, I have a 35-36 inch inseam and have a very long torso, so I need jeans that have a longer rise. As you can imagine, I have a VERY difficult time buying jeans and pants. Do you know of any brands in particular that would carry fashionable jeans that fit well?

    1. Try Rock and Republic or Brown Label. Also, 7 For all Mankind and Citizens of Humanity have some with higher rises, and their lengths should be around that.

  161. This is embarrassing, but I WORK FOR GAP and I AGREE!!!! I only own one pair of our jeans and they are the ‘Always Skinny’. I bought them just to wear at work. But they do stretch out terribly, especially in the knees. I’m a size 6 and they make my butt look the width of a 12 and super flat. On top of it I am short so I cuff them if I’m not in heels. It ruins the shape of my body.

  162. Rules to remember when clothes shopping.
    1) Just because you have them on does not mean they FIT.
    2) Just because they make them in your size does not mean you should wear them.

    1. I am trying to find that out myself. I have only had luck on ebay, but I hate to buy them without trying them on.

  163. WOW! I seriously NEED your help. I am wearing mom jeans and I need a jeans makeover! I love this post, I seriously believed that the same cut from a different brand would not make a difference, obviously I was VERY wrong. Seriously though jeans makeover time for this mamma

    Pretty Living

  164. I only wear skirts and dresses. I own a few denim skirts and I’m wondering, do you think the same rules apply to skirts if they are somewhat fitted like a pencil skirt? I would love to see a comparison for it :)
